Ladies Auxiliary
The members of the Ladies Auxiliary and
their guests met March IS at the Commun-
ity Center. Business items discussed
included the annual Bake Sale held March
26th and the annual Rummage Sale to be
held in May. The Ladies are now working to
gather items for the sale, so if you are in the
midst of Spring cleaning, please don't
throw away your usable items-Call Kay
Ashley 495-1119 or Thelma Stanton 475-2134.
They will arrange for someone to pick up
your throw-aways. Remember -- this sale
benefits all residents of Sachse because the
money is used to update the Volunteer Fire
Department's equipment.
The program for the March meeting was
presented by Bonnie Longacre who
displayed some of the many lovely decor-
ations she has handcrafted as well as her
doll collection. Many thanks to Bonnie for
sharing her talents with the group.
The April meeting which will be the 19th
will include a Salad Supper and a Cake
Decorating Demonstration by Mary Ann
Dean. Guests are always welcome.
ANNUAL GARAGE SALE

their annual garage sale May 21, at the fire
station on Highway 78 from 9 a.m. till dark.

Sachse Fire Department. We will feature
clothing, toys, furniture, games, drapes,
bedding, and many other items both new
and used.

like to make to this project, please call Kay
Ashley at 495-1119 or Thelma Stanton at

PRE SCHOOL PATTER
Spring is in the air, and the preschoolers
are full of energy. With the pretty weather
we have been able to have outdoor play.
Soon we will be taking a nature walk. Then
we will come back to the classroom and talk
about the "Signs of Spring."
For the past two weeks we have been
studying about "Our Country". This week
we started studying about plants. We have
made flowers out of egg cartons and we are
going to plant some seeds next week and
watch them grow.
The first of April we are going to take a
field trip to The Sachse Fire Station. Chief
Joe Stone is going to show us around the
station.
It is time to start thinking about register-
ing your preschooler for next year. If you
have a child 3'/2 or older and are interested
in our program, please contact Janet
Hughs at 495-1266. We have a limited enroll-
ment, so register early.

The Flowering Dogwood
Many legends have been related about the beautiful
dogwood tree that brightens the woods, hills, and
lawns in Springtime, with its delicate, showy blossoms. A
number of them are related to the Easter story, but this
one has a different origin:
A story from the Nanticoke Indians contends that the
white "petals" of the flowering dogwood were once Indian
maidens. It seems that their father, a selfish and wealthy
old chief, promised to give the maidens in marriage to the
Indian braves who brought the richest gifts.
Soon the old man's pinebark lodge was filled with soft
furs, doeskin blankets, and other beautiful specimens of
Indian craftsmanship. But the gods were angered at the
chief's greediness and changed him into a dogwood, a twisted
and bent tree that can never grow tall like the maples and
pines. And even now the white "petals" represent the
daughters, while the flowers in the center are the gifts the
suitors brought.
