Five Gallons
Of Gas, Please,
And Check
T' Oil
I
By Paul Bowling
I watched the attendant
pump five gallons of gasoline
up into the glass portion of
the pump which showed one
gallon marks. When the glass
indicated five gallons, he put
the hose in my gas tank and
opened the valve. The level
rapidly dropped in the pump
reservoir and the deed was
done. He then checked the oil
and polished the windshield to
crystal clarity - unless his
chamois had some grease
spots, which was often the
case.
"That'll be a dollar, please."
I paid and went on my way.
Yes, this happened some
time ago. Your first clue was
the 20 cents per gallon gas.
The second was the
hand-pumped dispenser. The
last was free service.
I could have mentioned the
5-cent Coke and nickel Mr.
Goodbar (the larger size,
too), but the subject is
gasoline.
So - Iraq has roared into
Kuwait and has taken over
the oil wells. The thirst for
power has spurred another
madman into action. He who
controls oil in the Middle East
wields a great deal of power -
enough to either control the
oil-using nations or to start a
really big war. Iraq seems to
be taking a big gamble that
could pay off, temporarily. It
will not pay off in the long run.
These megalomaniacs never
seem to understand this.
In a more serious vein, I
have noted that gasoline has
risen in price from 20 cents to
around a dollar and 20 cents.
The price of gasoline has
already gone up at some of
the pumps even though the
crude oil from Kuwait hasn't
even been purchased yet,
much less transported here,
refined, and trucked to the
service stations. Hey, is this
the age of speed or what?
Prophetic gasoline prices!
What will they think of next?
It looks a lot like
old-fashioned greed to me.
But, then, what do I know -
I'm only a consumer.
I hear that Jim Mattox is
forming a task force to
investigate price gouging.
Hey, Jim, nab the ones who
have already marked up the
price. It's a dead giveaway.
May your tanks never run
dry.
