Turn nondescript hall
into at-home gallery

Q. I generally don't get involved
in plans my wife makes I've
^ learned better! But with your help
I'd like to make an exception that
I think she will appreciate.
Birthday parties foi our kids
have been a disaster, and that's
almost putting it mildly. There
has been too much noise, confu-
sion and mess. Our little girl's
birthday is coming up soon (shell
be 6), and any idea you can give us
will be welcome.
A Make it short, an hour and a
half or two at the most, state a
specific beginning and ending
time (you don't want the parents
to drop them off for an indefinite
period as though you're running a
preschool drop-off program), limit
the number of children (four or
five may be enough).
Careful planning is important,
too. A good toy store will help you
identify simple games within your
budget in which everyone can win
Losers' tears are no fun!
Making things, like puppets or
masks, may be enjoyable for the
children, and so might a short
story carefully selected that one
of you can read to them.
Let your daughter in on the
planning, but handling the actual
party may be better in your wife's
hands, perhaps with your help Di-
viding responsibilities might be a
good idea, with either one of you
responsible for taking pictures if
you decide to do that.
A checklist of items needed for
the activities, including film and a
camera in operating order, will
help you avoid frantic last-minute
shopping or improvising.
Letters may be sent to Dr. Wil-
lard Abraham, Our Children, P.O.

Q: Our apartment has a long
hallway that runs the width of
both the living room and dining
room, starting at the front door.
I have put a console table and a
few pictures in the hall, but it
seems a shame to waste all that
space. What else would you sug-
gest? — M.J., New York.
A: Keep going in the direction
you have set: Add more works of
art — including sculpture and
other objects — and turn that un-
derachieving space into an at-
home gallery that is inviting to
guests and interesting to you and
your family as you go about your
daily rounds.
• Darken the walls, the better to
show off the artwork. Art galleries
Page 7
have made a cliche of dead-white
walls, but this is your home.
• Install lighting — track spots
are perfect - to highlight the
paintings and add an interesting
(and space-stretching) dimension
to the hall
• Add small pieces of sculpture
to your "gallery" on pedestals of
varying heights (they will take
very little floor space).
• Bring the floor into the act:
Display dramatic rugs underfoot
— an exciting Kilim, a painted
floor cloth runner or prized Orien-
tal.
Don't think of hallways as
merely a means of getting from
room to room. Your imagination
can make getting there half the
fun.
