Sun-smart protection
for the skin
442-4887
It's one of the dilemmas of the
'90s: Sun exposure can cause
health problems — from prema-
ture wrinkles to skin cancer — yet
it's still fashionable to bake to a
golden brown.
CLKSS\F\ED
This summer, you can be either
a grasshopper or an ant. (In the
fable the grasshopper lived only
for the present and suffered for it
later, the ant took precautions for
a safe future.)
Grasshoppers slather on "tan-
magnifier oils and hop onto the
beach at midday (or dive under
the lights at the tanning salon).
They look great in less than a
week, their white teeth flashing
Never mind that in 20 years or so
their skin will wither like an old
apple.
Also, grasshoppers, if they don
sunglasses at all, wear those with-
out sun-protective lenses; they're
indifferent to the fact that in 40
years or so they may begin to de-
velop cataracts
Ants, on the other hand, often
resemble mummies They wrap
up in opaque fabric, wear hats
with wide brims, cover protruding
parts with maximum-SPF (sun-
protection factor) lotions, and
shield their eyes from UV (ultravi-
olet) rays.
Sun-fearing ants may look sick-
ly but console themselves with the
conviction that in 20 years, even
though they remain pale, their
skin will be smooth and cancer-
fr^
Obviously, neither approach is
completely appealing. But there is
an updated ending to this modern
fable: Be a smart ant and you can
have the best of both worlds.
