The Men and Women's Day
program of Shiloh Missionary Bap-
tist Church will be held Sunday, July
29, at 3 p.m. Margaret Harper of
Shiloh and Charles Crouther of Oak
Grove Church of Queen City will
give short talks. The sermon will be
by Rev. Gamble. Mistress of
ceremonies is Mozell Thomas. Pas-
tor is the Rev. James Jernigan.
Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Lawson of
Shiloh Community celebrated their
46th wedding anniversary July 25 at
the home.

Joseph Schlitter, 98, of Atlanta,
were to be held at 10 a.m. Satur-
day, July 28, at Pine Crest
Cemetery.
He was born in Josephtown, Ger-
many. He came to the United States
July 10, 1900. He lived in Atlanta 36
years after moving from Philadel-
phia, Penn. He was member of First
Baptist Church and was a 33 de-
gree Mason.
Survivors include one son John
Schlitter of Belmawr, N.J.; seven
step-children; nine grandchildren;
19 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.

Services for Louis A. Lee, 66, of Linden, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July
22, at Hanner-Caver Chapel with Cliffton Daniels officiating. Burial was in
New Colony Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife Gladys Lee of Linden; five daughters Sharon
Woodruff of DeKalb, Beverly Maynard of Dallas, Phyllis Massingill of Dallas,
Linda Carmichael of Elkhart, Ind., and Tammy Lee of Linden; one brother
J.D. Lee of Bryans Mill; one sister Mildred Anderson of Linden; 20
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Plum tuckered out
Too much Softball can wear a person out — especially a little one.
John Dathan Pedraza, son of Johnny and Kimmle Pedraza, caught 40
winks while his big sister Charlie was helping the Atlanta Texannes
win the girls' Amateur Softball Association 12 & under state cham-
pionship. Little John Dathan's big sister and rest of her team will play
in the national tournament in Meridian, Miss.
Alumni sought for QCHS reunion
A reunion for Queen City High
School classes of 1950-55 will be
held Dec. 22.
Anyone with information on any of
these graduates should call James
Cauthorn at Teachers Credit Union
or Johnny Sirmans at 796-7666.
The alumni will also have a booth
at the Forest Festival Aug. 24-26.
Workers are needed for four days.

Nazarene church sets Bible school
"I Can Choose" is the theme for
this year's vacation Bible school at
the First Church of the Nazarene,
402 High School Lane. The VBS will
begin Monday, July 30, and will run
through Friday, Aug. 3, with a musi-
cal program on Sunday morning.
Each night will feature music,
crafts, quizzing, a make-and-take
workshop and a storytelling session.
In addition, a meal will be served
nightly to each child.
Children ages 3-12 are invited to
attend. The church van will also be
available lor transportation and a
ride can be obtained by calling 796-
3390 or 796-2001. Pastor Ross
Brunner and director Lisa Jester,
along with a full staff of workers, in-
vite all to attend.

ter, according to the chapter
secretary, Herman Barnett.

Youth tennis tournament in Texarkana

A tennis tournament for Ark-La-Tex area youth is scheduled for July
31 and Aug. 1 at the Southwest Center in Texarkana, Texas, according
to Jim Davis, tennis instructor for the City of Texarkana Parks and
Recreation Department. The event features both girls and boys singles
in the following divisions: 12th grade and under, ninth grade and under,
and sixth grade and under.
Trophies will be awarded to winners and runners-up in each division.
Ribbons will also be awarded to consolation winners. For additional infor-

Tri-State Red Cross seeks swimmers
Journal Staff Report
The Tri-State Chapter of the American Red Cross, which serves Cass
County, needs swimmers for its annual Swim-a-Cross to be held Satur-
day, Aug. 4, at the Texarkana College Pinkerton Center from 9 a.m. until
5 p.m.
Pledge sheets are available now at the Tri-State chapter house at 821
Spruce St. in Texarkana. Only $25 collected from sponsors gains entry
to the pool, a free t-shirt and a chance in a drawing for a Six Flags Over
Texas weekend.
Other prizes and trophies will be awarded for the longest distance
swim and most money raised, as well as trophies by age groups. For ad-
ditional information call (214) 793-5602.
The chapter, which is active in
both Arkansas and Texas, is set to
meet for the first time this year on
Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 6:30 p.m.
"All members, as well as other
registered officials and prospective
new officials are urged to attend,"
Barnett said. "Rule books, manuals
and various other materials will be
distributed."
Barnett said the chapter currently
has about 50 members, but "we
need 70 and could utilize 90 officials
by next year.
"We are earnestly seeking new
officials and experience officials
who are not affiliated with a chapter.
We are seeking officials who live in
Texarkana, and area cities such as
Ashdown, Hope, Lewisville,
Stamps, Atlanta, DeKalb, Hooks
and New Boston," continued Bar-
nett.
Prospective officials should have
a background in football, integrity,
common sense and a sincere con-
cern for the safety of players. Prior
officiating experience, while helpful,
is not essential.
