Children's medical clinic seeing patients

The Piano Children Medical
Clinic - Wylie Branch opened
its doors April 5.
But before the first patient
arrived, members of First
Baptist Church Wylie gave the
clinic a "baby - shower."
Church members gathered at
the clinic last week to give dia-
pers, baby wipes, toys,
teethers, clothes, over-the-
counter medications and prac-
tically anything else you need
when you have a child.
"The gifts were fantastic and
will help so much," said Jenna
Lawson, the clinic's director of
development.
A nonprofit organization,
donations to the clinic are tax
deductible. Groups or individ-
uals wanted to donate items
can find a needs list at plano-
cmc.org/help.htm or can call
Lawson at 214-440-5091.
And the clinic can always
use monetary donations as
well, Lawson said. "We have a
paid pediatrician, nurses and
medical assistants," she said.
The Wylie clinic became a
reality thanks to a grant from
the Medical Center of Piano
and the generosity of those in
the community. The space for
the clinic and all its furnish-
ings have been donated.
"It's been wonderful,"
Lawson said. "Even the chairs
in the waiting room were
donated after Susan (Schuler)
mentioned on Facebook that
the clinic needed chairs."
Schuler is executive director
of the clinic. She is a former
city of Wylie secretary and
Wylie ISD school board
trustee.
She said she understands the
need for a clinic in Wylie.
Recent school statistics show
that about 30 percent of the
children in WISD qualify for
free or reduced-price lunches.
"If families are having trou-
ble putting food on the table,
certainly health care isn't
going to be a priority until
someone gets sick," she said.
Located at 303 S. Hwy. 78,
Ste. 106 (that's the strip center
between Sonic and American
National Bank) the clinic will
be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5
p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday (excluding noon to 1
p.m. for lunch).
Schuler said the clinic isn't
just for children in the Wylie
area.
"This will be a more con-
venient location for families in
the southeast part of the coun-
ty - Lavon, Farmersville,
Princeton and Blue Ridge,"
she said.
Children will be seen by
appointment. To make an
appointment, call 972-801-
9689.

The Sachse Chamber of
Commerce is inviting the com-
munity to its monthly network-
ing luncheon at 11:30 a.m.
Tuesday, April, 12 in
Northplace Church.
The church is located at 2709
Third Street.
The featured speaker will be
Patty Granville. Her presenta-
tion will showcase the impact
of the arts on the economy.
Granville has been managing
the Garland Performing Arts
Center since 1982.
In 2003, the Garland City
Council voted to name the arts
center for Granville. The
Garland PAC became the Patty
Granville Performing Arts
Center.
Granville earned a degree in
theater from William & Mary iri
Williamsburg, Va. She has a
master's degree in theater from
the University of North Texas.
In 1969, she became a
national favorite as "Miss
Patty" on the syndicated show
"Romper Room."
She moved to Dallas in 1973.
performing in several popular
dinner theaters.
Granville also hosted a cable
television show, "Art in
Action," and produced the
Dallas Press Club's gridiron
shows.
While performing at Casa
Manana, Granville met
Broadway choreographer Buff
Shurr who had moved to Wylie.
She asked him to direct the
new Garland Summer
Musicals. And 29 years later
Shun is still the director.
This season will feature "The
Music Man" in June and "Cats"
in July.
The luncheon will be spon-
sored by Terry Griner of
Corporate Printing and Video.
"We specialize in business
letterhead, envelopes, business
cards, forms, copy/duplication,
graphic design, custom labels
and more," Griner said. "We
also provide video production
and editing for product and
safety materials."
The cost of the luncheon is
$ 15 with a reservation. To make
a reservation call 972-496-1212
or log on to www.sachsecham-
ber.com.
New permits
restrict sales

permitted for up to 90 days, Christmas
trees for up to 40 days and firewood
sales for up to 30 days, with two avail-
able renewals allowing a total of 90
days.
"In addition to the permit periods, no
more than two permits for any type or
combination of types of temporary sales
can be granted within a 12-month peri-
od," he said. "The property maintenance
section of the ordinance remained. The
signage requirements were modified, as
requested by the council, to limit the
number of signs to one identification
sign."
Councilman Bill Adams said he was
very pleased council approved the
ammended ordinance.
"Thankfully, these people will either
have to keep their sites clean and order-
ly or move on," Adams said. "The
choice is theirs. This ordinance has the
teeth to give code enforcement and com-
munity development the ability to shut
them down immediately if they fail to
follow the citys guidelines."
Wylie soldier killed
on base in Afghanistan

Robert Forrest Welch IV and were helping to raise Mrs.
Welch's nephew Aaden.
The family is living on base at Fort Knox, Ky.
In a prayer request email Welch's father said. "About
all we know for sure is that Rob was killed this morning
while walking in the FOB. He and another soldier were
in the impact area, and Rob took most of the shrapnel
from the blast. The other soldier is injured but OK.
"When they got Rob to the aid station for surgery,
they ran out of his blood type and when word got out
they needed blood, over 200 of his soldiers volunteered
to give blood. But the wounds were so severe, he did
not survive." At press time, the military had not con-
firmed or released any information about the incident or
arrangements.
Welch was deployed Jan. 6 and, according to infor-
mation provided by the Military Support Ministry at
Central Christian Church in Richardson which the
Welch family attends, he was beginning a "new job
within his battalion" which took him into the field more.
"All the inherit dangers of war aside ... it's especially
tough to accept that Robby and the other soldier were
just 'walking on the base' - a supposed 'sale' place -
when the mortar landed in their path," Welch family
friend, fellow church member and military mom Helena
Isbell wrote in the email informing church members of
Welch's death. "Clearly no place is safe during war."

VETERINARY HOSPITAL
The staff of Parker Road Veterinary Hospital would
like to extend a special thanks to the Wylie Fire Department
and Wylie Animal Control personnel for their quick response
and excellent work during our recent fire. Thanks to their
efforts, no animals were injured, our records are intact and we
sustained minimal damage to the front of our building. We may
have been inconvenienced, but are still fully operational and
will use additional temporary facilities on site to care for our
patients. We look forward to completing a larger and improved
clinic as a result of this challenge.
