Sachse's certified 2008 tax rolls
Ihowed an increase in both Dallas and
Collin Counties, according to informa-
tion from Sachse Finance Director
Alan Dickerson.
Sachse's taxable property value in
Collin County is reported at
$408,624,400 up by 14.20 percent or
$50,812,438 from last year's total.
Of this amount $34,788,816 is from
new construction.
The taxable property value in
Dallas County is reported at
$876,694,370, up by 2.24 percent or
$19,207,410 from last year's total for
Dallas County. Of this amount,
$10,843,920 is from new construction.
This new construction is improved
property value that wason the ground
on Jan. 1, 2008 and represents new
home and commercial starts from late
2006 and into 2007.
The average home in the Collin
County portion of Sachse is worth
$193,200, according to the Collin
County Central Appraisal District.
That's an increase of almost 6 percent
or $10,822 over 2007 totals.
The Dallas County Appraisal'
District reports the average home cost
in the Dallas County portion of
Sachse is $161,434, an increase of
slightly more than 2 percent or about
$3,400.
When the two counties information
is blended, the City shows property
value of $ 1,285,318,770 and the aver-
age home price becomes $177,713.
Officials said property value is
determined by size, location and con-
dition. Property is reappraised at least
every three years using a drive-by
method.
Appraisal districts make valuations
early in the year and then release pre-
liminary tax rolls which cities and
school boards use to build their budg-
ets and set their tax rates. Preliminary
rolls are released in May and certified
rolls in late July.

Both Garland and Wylie ISD have
earned academically acceptable rat-
ings from the Texas Education
Agency.
The TEA issued its 2008 District
Accountability rating, essentially a
report card for each district as a whole
and each individual school campus,
based primarily on student Texas
Assessment of Knowledge and Skills
test scores.
WISD received an academically
acceptable rating, missing the recog-
nized rating by two points. The eco-
nomically disadvantaged subgroup
scored 68 percent in science rather
than the required 70.
"Being a goal-driven individual, 1
am disappointed that WISD is not a
TEA recognized district; however, I
am very pleased and satisfied with the
trend lines WISD has set,"
Superintendent Dr. H. John Fuller
said. "We are moving in the right
direction and demonstrating academic
success."
Wylie ISD's Harrison Intermediate,
Draper Intermediate and Cox
Elementary received the recognized
rating.
Wylie High School missed recog-
nized status by a single point - the
economically disadvantaged subgroup
scored 69 percent in math. Only two
groups at Wylie East High School

A taste of Europe can be found just
a few miles down Hvvy. 205 at the San
Martino Winery in Rockwall.
Emilio and Maria Ramos opened
the winery in 2004.
Mrs. Ramos left her job as director
of financial aid at the University of
Texas - Dallas to run the winery.
Although Mr. Ramos is still the exec-
utive director of technology fqr the
Dallas County Community College
District, he said he spends all his
available time at the winery.
At the San Martino Winery, visitors
can tour the production room with its
American oak barrels and stainless-
steel vats and sample the wines. They
can drop in, buy a glass or bottle of
wine and relax in the main tasting
room while sampling gourmet appe-
tizers.
The winery offers two club mem-
berships. Membership benefits may
include quarterly wine shipments,
recipes with wine pairings from the
chef and price reductions for wine
tastings.
The winery currently has more than
700 memberships.
About 100 people attended the
recent Harvest Fest. Guests helped the
Ramoses pick grapes, crush them a la
"1 Love Lucy" and sample wine made
from last year's harvest.
The Ramos family has been making
wine for hundreds of years in Spain.
Mr. Ramos didn't want it to end.
"It was a tradition that basically
was going to end with his grandfa-
ther," Mrs. Ramos said.
With the family's history, it was
natural Mr. and Mrs Ramos enjoyed

The Sachse Police Department is
utilizing its Reverse 911 system to
broadcast important information to the
community.
"The Reverse 911 System is a com-
munications tool that uses a patented
combination of database and GIS map-
ping technologies to deliver outbound
notifications to the public," Lt. Marty
Cassidy said. "The technology allows
messages to be delivered via a variety
of traditional communication channels
including land lines and cell phones."
Police Chief Dennis Veach said
recently the new technology was used
to send a recorded telephone message
to a neighborhood in the community.
"The message alerted the residents
that there were several thefts from
vehicles in their neighborhood." he
said. "We asked them to be on the
lookout and report anything suspi-
cious."
Veach said although the calls may be
perceived as heralding an increase in
crime, that is not the case.
"We're using the system to make
people aware of a situation in the early
stages," he said. "Reverse 911 is play-
ing a key role in ensuring effective
communication, not only for general
information, but also in times of cri-
sis."
Officials said typically the Reverse
911 system might be used to warn of
an impending disaster, evacuate an
area due to a hazardous substance leak
or spill, seek public assistance in locat-
ing a lost child or other public safety
emergencies.
Cassidy said some vehicle break-ins
and thefts occur when drivers in leave
their vehicles unlocked with valuables
in sight.
"Never leave any contents or valu-
ables in plain sight," he said. "Remove
cellular phones, audio systems, com-
puters, packages, sport equipment,
cameras or purses, etc. Lock them in
the trunk before you park or take them
with you."
Veach said his officers are also leav-
ing notices for residents alerting them
that something on their property is not
secure such as a garage door left open
at night.
Veach said another pro-active meas-
ure SPD has started came from a sug-
gestion by Officer Garry Jordan.
"The city is now posting signs in
windows of newly constructed houses
stating that there may be random video
surveillance in the area," he said.
"Construction theft is literally and fig-
uratively big business by stealing
things such as whole air conditioning
