said. "We were given good scores."
Assistant Superintendent
Division of Student Services and
Community Relations John
Washington agreed.
"We're satisfied with the overall
acceptable ranking," he said. "We
are a large district with 75 campus-
es, and we are continuously work-
ing to raise the levels."
GISD extends from the Dallas
city limits northeast to the county
line and serves the communities of
Garland, Rowlett and Sachse.
With a student enrollment of
over 56,000 students. GISD is cur-
«itly the fourth largest school dis-
ct in the Dallas-Fort Worth
metroplex and is 12th largest dis-
trict in the state of Texas
To achieve the academically
acceptable ranking all students
must meet the following standard

improvement was John W.
Armstrong with their recognized
rating.
The school was rated academi-
cally unacceptable last year.
"We're very proud of all the high
scores we received," Armstrong
Principal Rebecca Ayars said.
"Everyone worked very hard to
achieve the our recognized rating."
GISD overall ratings were:
Reading/ELA -.90 percent, writing
- 93 percent, social studies - 92 per-
cent, mathmatics - 78 percent and
science - 72 percent.

continued from page IA
McMillan and intermediate schools
Davis and Harrison.
According to materials provided
by the school district, improvement
was made. In an analysis of the 25
academic rating areas, Wylie
improved in 10 of the 25, remained
the same in six, and decreased in
nine.
In further interpretation of the rat-
ings, district officials said WISD
was ranked at the exemplary level
for all students in reading (92 per-
cent), writing (94 percent) and
social studies (94 percent.) The dis-
trict was also rated at the recognized
level for all students in math (84
percent) and science (81 percent).
In order to receive recognized sta-
tus for the district, however, 75 per-
cent of students in each subgroup
must pass the minimum standard, a
standard that was raised from 70
percent in 2006. (Subgroups, into
which student scores are divided.
are African American, Hispanic,
white and economically disadvan-
taged.)
Wylie missed the 75 percent min-
imum in three subgroups in science:
African American students missed it
by 2 percentage points, Hispanic
students missed it by 4 percentage
points and the economically disad-
vantaged group was 11 percent
below the 75 percent minimum.
District officials said science and
math will receive special emphasis
in the upcoming school year. Even
though 81 percent of Wylie students
met the minimum expectations, they
said, three of the subgroups did not
score at the 75 percent standard.
In math, though the district met
the standard for recognized status,
there was no improvement in the
economically disadvantaged sub-
group and there was a I percentage
point decrease among all students
along with the Hispanic and white
subgroups. The African American
subgroup, however, showed a 3 per-
cent improvement in math.
"Our goal is always to be exem-
plary; hence. I am disappointed that
we are not a recognized district,"
said Superintendent Dr. John Fuller.
"However, I am extremely pleased
with the progress we are making
considering that 60 percent of the
students we have in Wylie ISD were
not with us four years ago and the
number of economically disadvan-
taged students has increased from
10 percent to 25 percent over the
past 15 years."
Fuller also said he is pleased with
the manner in which Wylie's princi-
pals and teachers are adapting to the
increased size and changing demo-
graphics of the community.
"The new students who have
come to us speaking another lan-
guage are experiencing success, and
we have the majority of our eco-
nomically disadvantaged students
meeting the minimum standards.
With a 'no excuse' philosophy and
with a commitment to helping every
student find success, Wylie ISD will
be one of the largest, if not the
largest, TEA Exemplary District in
the great state of Texas within the
next two years."
Fuller said he is optimistic about my ongoing theme as I work with
the district's quest for progress. our parents, staff and students on
"Continuous improvement will be our journey to excellence."
