Lady Pirates lose tough battles to Piano, Piano East
By Shiela K. Haynes
Contributing Writer
The Lady Pirates took their
best shot at Piano and Piano
East but came up short both
times.
They fell to the Lady
Wildcats in five games (25-11,
17-25, 13-25, 25-17, 16-18)
and lost to the Lady Panthers in
four (25-23, 13-25, 19-25, 15-
25).
The East loss completed
Wylie's first pass through the
district competition. They
began the second round of dis-
trict games with a home contest
Tuesday versus Piano West.
They play Friday at Allen
and head to Me Kinney Boyd
for an Oct. 20 match.
Head coach Susan Kennedy
said, "The girls stepped up
(against Piano). It's one of the
best matches we played all sea-
son. They played together.
Many different people stepped
up."
The Lady Pirates nailed
Piano 25-11 in Game I, but the
opponent rebounded from the
loss to win the next two sets.
Wylie came back for a Game 4
victory behind a solid defense
and great play at the net.
On game point of Game 4,
Wylie had back-to-back blocks

with a kill by Mackenzi Estes.
The match extended to a 15-
point Game 5 to determine a
winner.
Wylie took the early lead, but
Piano rallied to pull even at 13
two points for victory, and the
evenly matched squads battled it
out to 18-16, at which point
Piano claimed the hard-fought
victory.
"Emotions were running so
high. It could have gone either
way. It's tough as a coach. All
you can ask is for them to keep
playing," Kennedy said after the
game in the locker room.
Rachel Maslowski had an
outstanding match with 14 kills
and five blocks.
Setters Mackenzi Estes and
Kylie Garza combined for 35
assists.
The Lady Pirates showed
their mental toughness when
they bounced back and made a
good run at Piano East in
Friday's match.
"Regardless of the record,
we're' continuing to play hard
and compete. It's been business
as usual," said Kennedy.
