Obituary information is pub-
lished each week at no charge.
Deadline for the current week's
issue is noon Monday.
Feb. 3 through 10, Cub Scouts
and Boys Scouts in Wylie, Murphy
and Sachse will be collecting
canned goods for' Scouting For
Food, part of the largest food collec-
tion drive in the United States.
Last year, more than 12,000 cans
were collected in the area alone and
more than 500,000 items were
donated to food pantries throughout
the Metroplex. Since Scouting for
Food began in 1988, Scouting offi-
cial said more than 6.4 million cans
have been collected and distributed
to more than 50 food banks,
Food collected locally will be
donated to the Wylie Christian Care
Center, as well as the Friendship
House in Garland. These assistance
centers serve more than 2,000 needy
families.
Saturday, Feb. 3 through Friday,
Feb. 10, most residents of Sachse,
Wylie and Murphy neighborhoods
will receive a yellow bag on their
doors.
On the morning of Feb. 10,
Scouts from area Cub Scout packs
and Boy Scout troops will be pick-
ing up your filled bags.
"It is our goal to place a bag on
the doorstep of every resident in the
Circle Ten Council territory," said
Ponce Duran, Scout Executive.
Circle Ten Council is comprised
of most cities in the Dallas
Metroplex.
Items to donate
Food items that are especially
needed include:
• Pasta and rice
• Canned meat and fish (ham,
chicken, tuna, etc.)
• Dry cereals, oatmeal
• Peanut butter, jelly
• Packaged pasta or dinner
mixes like macaroni and cheese.
Hamburger Helper
• Soups
• Canned spaghetti, ravioli, chili
• Canned fruit and vegetables
According to Sharon Smith of the
Wylie Christian Care Center, "In the
past months we have experienced a
tremendous increase in the number
of families that need food and other
essentials due to the tough economy.
The Scouting for Food drive is the
largest contributor to our shelves
each year. It allows us to stock our
shelves for months, so that as many
people as possible can be helped."
Scouts of all ages help
Scouts of every age participate in
Scouting for Food, as part of doing a
good turn for others in the commu-
nity. They range from first-grade
Tiger Cubs to Eagle Scouts who are
in high school.
In Wylie and Murphy, Scouts not
only collect the bags, but sort the
cans and boxes of food that arrive at
the Wylie Christian Care Center on
Ballard Street on collection day,
i Mi
Feb. 10.
Many Sachse Scouts take their
food directly to Friendship House,
where it is sorted and put on the
shelves.
"There's nothing like seeing the
faces of our Scouts light up when
they collect food to give to the
Wylie Christian Care Center," said
Jeaninc Stevens, Wylie resident and
Great Plains District Scouting for
Food Co-Chairperson, along with
her husband, David.
"Even the youngest scouts feel a
sense of pride because they are help-
ing so many people in the communi-
ty who are less fortunate," Mr.
Stevens said.
Rain, shine or snow
No matter what the weather,
Scouts will be collecting filled bags,
Stephens said.
"If the weather is really bad (like
several years ago when it snowed),
please leave your bags out anyway,"
she said. "With so many restaurants
and grocery stores in the area, it's
hard to imagine that people
going hungry ... but they are,
than ever."
Need a hag?
If you would like to donate bags
of food but live in a more rural area
and do not receive a yellow bag. call
972-442-6963 or 972-814-5997 or
send an email to Stephens at tar-
dam@aol.com.
*i John Anthony Solis of
Cub Pack 1049 can't get
enough of all the yellow
hags that were collected
in last year's Scouting
for Food drive. This
year's event starts
Saturday, Feb. 3, with
the delivery of the yel-
low hags.
