City celebrates new facilities in 2010
Officials look forward to opening of Bush Turnpike extension

As city leaders, members of the
community and elected officials pon-
dered the highlights of 2010, items dis-
cussed were: the Eastern Extension of
the President George Bush Turnpike,
the opening of the new municipal com-
plex, numerous infrastructure
improvements including the widening
of Hwy. 78, a tight balanced budget
and the hope for a 2011 upturn in the
economy.
Reflecting on 2010, Mayor Mike
Felix sa d, "It was an exciting year of
accomplishments for the city because
the citizens, city staff and city officials
worked in concert with each other."
Felix was one of many community
leaders who agreed to share their
thoughts regarding the highlights of
2010 and the biggest issues of 2011.
"I am very pleased to say the
Eastern Extension of the President
George Bush Turnpike is well under
way," he said. "I realize one of the
biggest assets the community possess-
es is the development of the parcels
adjacent to the tollway extension. The
development will serve as a new gate-
way to the community. The city leader-
ship, staff, citizens and business com-
munity have made a com' Mtment with
the formation and adoption of the 190
overlay district to help guide its devel-
opment.
"The State Highway 78 widening
project is almost completed through
Sachse," he said. "In 2010 two addition-
al lanes were opened to traffic. New
landscaping has been installed where
the widening is complete. Construction
is ongoing at the intersection with
Woodbridge Parkway and Hwy. 78 to
accommodate the Woodbridge Parkway
north extension project. The actual
roadway extension and new railroad
crossing are scheduled to begin con-
struction in 2011."
Felix's list of 2010 accomplishments
includes the new traffic lights at the
intersections of Hwy. 78/ Williford and
Ranch/Hooper Roads; the installation of
new water lines adjacent to the
President George Bush Turnpike; the
rehabilitation of several streets including
sections of McDearmon", Sachse Street,
Dewitt Street and 4th Street; the widen-
ing of 5th Street, north of Hwy. 78 with
a reconstructed railroad crossing; and
improving Maxwell Creek Road north
of Sachse's Fire Station No. 2.
"Sachse was able to secure $7.5 mil-
lion from the North Central Texas
Council of Governments to extend the
widening of Bunker Hill Road to New
Miles Road," he said. "Once funding
was secured, right-of-way acquisitions
began, and most of the needed right of
way for the road was purchased.
Acquisition of right of way will contin-
ue into 2011 and construction of utility
relocations and the roadway will fol-
low. Roadway construction will begin
in 2011 and be completed in 2012."
Felix said a new bridge over
Maxwell Creek, Hooper Bridge, is
under design. Required permit applica-
tions for the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers and the Federal Emergency
Management Agency have been sub-
mitted for review. The project is a joint
project with the city of Wylie and
Collin County.
Felix noted that in 2010 the new city
INCODE computer financial software
system was installed, a new Parks
Master Plan was adopted, American
National Bank was selected as the city
depository, the city council banned K
2- synthetic marijuana and approved a
Garland/Sachse Railroad Quiet Zone
for Murphy Road, a Sachse Economic
Development Corporation trade analy-
sis and installed a new city website.
