do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
It was nearly two centuries ago, six years after the end of the Revolu-
tionary War, that a group of determined patriots took less than four
months in the summer of 1 787 to create and sign the enduring document
which set up the whole complex platform of laws and agreements which
