PREVIEW. Seboomook, in case you've
never heard the name before, is our new-
est national high adventure area up in
Maine. For two summers it's been booked
solid with older Scouts and Explorers
who've had the time of their lives canoe-
ing its waters. Photographer Tim Eagen
got that lively cover shot for us, and free-
lancer Tom MacPherson invites you along
for a look at the action in "Wet Foot in the
Backcountry."
Cub Scout day camps are springing up
in councils all across the country for our
boys in blue who like to get away from the
hot city each summer. Camp Friedlander,
just east of Cincinnati, Ohio is a 300-acre
wonderland for Cub Scouts and their lead-
ers. When freelance writer John Powers
visited there for a few days this past sum-
mer, he had such a good time that he
didn't want to leave. He calls his story
"Camp Friedlander: One of a Kind."
Robert Kelsey, a top flight conserva-
tionist, offers us some needed advice
about the example we should set when we
camp in our state and national parks with
Scouts or Explorers. "Ethics for Campers"
is worth reading, thinking about and shar-
ing with our friends.
Bob DeBuhr once served as a career
Scouter overseas with the Transatlantic
Council. Not long ago he jotted down
some true tales about what went on over
there in his 2,000-mile-long Crusader Dis-
trict. We got such a kick out of what he
had to say, that we couldn't resist passing
along his words to you.. They're called
"True and Terrible Tales from Athens to
Addis Ababa."
Our U.S. Constitution has been very
much in the news during the past year, and
reporter Jim Winchester traces the history
of this enduring document in "We the Peo-
ple" — part of our Bicentennial series.
Are many of the theories about child
growth and learning pure truths or pure
bunk? Virginia and Morton Edwards
teamed up to find out in "It Ain't Neces-
sarily So."
