Notes

"Description of Photo: Templeton Building, 214 S. Main St., now owned and occupied by Dr. John Thigpen. Building was remodeled into two-story one in 1941 by owner, Mrs. Don W. Mayne (nee Hazel Templeton) then living in Denver, Colo. During its years, building was a store on first floor, offices on other two floors, was a tone time a hotel, was topped by First National Bank's five-story building at S. Main and Commerce Sts. until razed in the 1960s and replaced with what is now the Austin Building. Note merchandise displayed on sidewalk, common practice in earlier days. John Allen Templeton erected the building as rental property 1880s. Building once housed addition to Travis Clinic, was also home to Odd Fellows lodge for a time.

Note the Coca-Cola sign on side of building, when the drink was 5 cents per bottle. Note also unpaved streets. Jacksonville paved first streets in 1926."
