North Plains Tournament
starts today at 9 a.m.
The annual North Plains Tour-
nament of the Claude High School
gets underway today, Thursday,
and will close Saturday evening,
Jan. 2.
Eleven schools will be represent-
ed. They are Stinnett, Texline,
White Deer, Silverton, Groom,
Clarendon, Panhandle, Happy,
Friona and Gruver.
The prices are $1 and 50c per
session, which consists of four
games. The Mother's Club will
serve food during the tournament
as they have in the past, in the
school cafeteria.
There will be three sessions
per day Thursday and Friday and
two sessions on Saturday. The
brackets will run as follows:
Thursday, First Session
9;QQ Panhandle, Happy girls
10:15 Panhandle, Happy boys.
11:30 Stinnett, Texline girls
Thursday, Second Session
1:00 Stinnett, Texline boys.
2:15 Friona, Gruver girls.
3:30 Friona, Gruver boys.

boosters. It is hope their exper-
ience here will be an enjoyable

School officials extend their
appreciation to these contributors
as It has always meant the suc-
cess enjoyed by the annual North
Plains Tournament.

Claude girls win
Silverton Turny
The Mustangettes of Claude
H'pjh School took first place in
the girls division of the Silverton
basket':a 11 tournament held the
week end of Dec. 18, 1959.
They won over the Owletts of
Silverton by a 48-28 margin.
Claude grabbed an early lead,
scoring fourteen points in the
first quarter as compared to the
four scored by Silverton. The half-
time score stood at 26-14 in
Claude's favor. Each team scored
approximately the same in the
second half.
For Claude, Betty Ransom led
in personal scoring with 24 pts.
Shirley Oles scored 10, Donna
Hundley made 8 and Jo Carol
Cobb made 2.
Betty Ransom and Donna Dye
were among those selected on the
all tournament team.
The Claude boys dropped two
games at the tournament, and
lost out for final play.
Haley enters
race for State'
Representative
Announcement of candidacy for
the Texas Legislature was made
this week by Evetts Haley Jr., of
Canyon. He will oppose Ted B.
Springer's candidacy for re-eleo-
tion to a third term, representing
the 94th flotorial district, which
includes Armstrong County,

Santa Claus
leaves gift
Santa Claus delivered a fine
7 lb., 15 oz. boy, Kevin Teague,
at 7:07 Christmas morning, Fri-
day, Dec. 25, 1959. The justly
proud parents finding him in
their stocking are Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Hupp of Amarillo. Grand-
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Forrest
Hupp of McLean. Mrs. Jack Hupp
is the former Edwina Laycock.
Aunt passed away
Christmas Day
Mrs. Clifton Bell received word
Christmas Day of the sudden
death of her aunt, Mrs. Joe Rude
in Mangum, Okla. Mrs. Bell lived
with this aunt for many years as
a child. Among those attending
the funeral held Sunday after-
noon were Mr. and Mrs. Ottfton
Bell, Mrs. Sue Kerr and Mr*. Ax-
telle Cobb.

Services held for
Mrs. Patching
The community was saddened
Sunday on the death of a
gracious and kindly lady, Mrs.
Jessie Jean Patching, who had
teen a neighbor and friend in
this county for many years.
Mrs. Patching, 66, passed away
at the Northwest Texas Hospital
in Amarillo at 12:30 a.m. Sunday,
December 27, 1959. She was the
wife of Fred Patching who has
been a long time resident of the
Claude and Goodnight areas en-
gaged in ranching.
Surviving besides her husband
are two daughters, Mrs. Jean Bass
of Amarillo and Mrs. Jane Beck-
ett of Claude; four brothers, R.
F. Smith and E. M. Smith, both
of Dallas: J. R. Smith of Hous-
ton and J. A. Smith of Hamilton,
Mont.; a sister, Mrs. H. M. Morse
of Fort Worth; and five grand-
children.
Funeral services were conduct-
ed at 3:00 p.m. Monday in the
Claude Methodist Church with
the Rev. C. C. Hardaway, pastor,
officiating, assisted by the Rev.
James Todd and Rev. J. J. Allison,
both of Claude.
Pallbearers were Tom Cobb,
Horace Dye, Joe Sparks, Le Roy
Campbell, Alfred McMurtry, Ed-
win Reed, Judge Davis and Billy
Minkley.
Firemen stop blaze
at Legion Park
Sunday afternoon around 4:00
the local Fire Department and
alf three trucks were called to
the scene of a grass fire at the
Legion Park, southeast of town.
The fire burned a strip of grass
all across the ground. As you
know, the local smoke-eaters put
an end to this fire in nothing
flat. Chief Chas. W. Stewart re-
ported a good turn out of the
men and they did a good job.

Services held for
S. D. Burrow
Memorial services for Samuel
Davis Burrow, 85, were conducted
at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the
First Christian Church in Claude
with the Rev. James Todd, min-
ister, and the Rev. A. B. Mosley,
pastor of the Pleasant Valley Bap-
tist Church, officiating.
Mr. Burrow passed away at 5:12
p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 1959, at
Mary's Rest Home in Clarendon.
He was a retired farmer and
rancher who had lived in Arm-
strong County for 34 years, most
of that time at Goodnight. For
the past nine years he has made
his home in Claude.
He was born Aug. 11, 1874 in
Tennessee. He was a member of
the Baptist Church.
Burial was in the Akins Ceme-
tery, near Ponder, Texas, at 1:30
p.m. Thursday under the direc-
tion of Murphy Funeral Home of
Clarendon.
Survivors are his wife. Addie. of
Claude; a daughter, Mrs. Donna
Wilson of Odessa; two sons, Davis
and Glenn Burrow, bath of
Claude; four sisters, Mrs. Maggie
Gray of Denton; Mrs. Virgie Va-
ughter of Laredo; Mrs. Donnie
Vaden of Bromide, Okla.; two
brothers, Jack Burrow of Edmond,
Okla., and Elmer (Cush) Burrow
of California: and three grand-
children.
Received painful
burns Saturday
Marlene Brunson, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Warner Brunson,
received second and third degree
burns on her legs and feet Sat-
urday evening about 7:30. She
was rushed to an Amarillo hospi-
tal for treatment. While M. E.
was preparing a turkey supper,
she leaned one of her crutches
on the stove. Marlene stumbled
on the crutch knocking a skillet
of hot gravy off the stove. Mar-
lene is back home and able to be
up some but the burns are still
painful.
M. E. was on crutches due to
a painful sprained ankle and foot
received a few days before.
