The local ACP Committee has
approved Sorghum Almum grass
under the Conservation Reserve
program at 80% of $3 per lb. This
would mean a $2.40 payment per

SOIL DISTRICT NEWS
The Staked Plains Soil Conserva-
tion District voted to buy two Nis-
bet grass drills. These drills will
be hooked together and run by one
operator. The other drills can still
be leased in the usual manner.
With close to 3,000 acres of land
to be seeded back to grass in 1957
and '58. The district felt it should
take the initiative in getting this
equipment. More details will be
released on the matter later.
Bids on the Soil District equip-
ment were opened in the regular
meeting, Jan. 11th. One sweep plow
sold for $150.00. The other for
$91.25. The rotary subsoiler sold
for $271.25 with 18 sets of weights.
Glen Butler was the lucky bidder on
the rotary subsoiler. Bill Robinson
bought one of the plows at $91.25.
The other plow sold to a Carson
County farmer.

FERTILIZING AND
IRRIGATING WHEAT
I have a few reprints on the a-
bove subject. The experimental work
was done at the Bushland Experi-
ment Station, Amarillo. There are
quite a few small plots of irrigated
wheat around and you might want
to try some anhydrous ammonia.
The best of five different test at
Bushland showed that 80 lbs. of
nitrogen was the aptimum level.
Irrigation at this level was done in
the fall, after dry sowing, in order
to get a stand of wheat.
A very light watering was done
then for the purposes of getting a
stand only. Other irrigations were
carried out on March 28th, when
the wheat was in the joint stage
and 4 inches of water applied; and
one 4 inch application at the early
boot stage on April 30 and a 4 inch
application just after flowering,
May 17th.
Yield on this plot was approxi-
mately 46 bu. per acre.
If you would like a reprint on
the above subject I will be glad to
furnish you with one.

BETTER YEARS AHEAD
Only 9.94 inches of rainfall was
reported at the Amarillo Weather
Station in 1956. This is the driest
year reported since 1892 or a 65
year period.
1952 through 1956 shows less than
14 inches each year. This also es-
tablishes a record and conclusion
that this is the worst drought ever
recorded in the history of the high
plains. Fact is, only three years
have equaled this record, when only
11.15 inches was received in 1910;
only 12.22 inches in 1933 and 13.33
inches in 1934.
The so called drought in the 30's
could now be considered the wet
years as compared to our last five
years.
Maybe we are over the bad part
and the wet years are about to
set in. As one fellow put it, "I am
five years closer to a bumper crop
than I was in 1952."
The news you sent in was very
much appreciated. It helps.
