Newspapers and
£conomic Well Being
If anyone still wonders just how
valuable the newspaper is an adver-
tising medium for retailers -in this
•era when other media are compet-
ing vigorosly for business- he would
•do well to study a survey made by
the Bureau of Business Research
•of Michigan State University.
The survey deals with the effect
on retail sale of the 1955 newspaper
-strike in Detroit. It shows that a
gain in over-all sales in the Detroit
metropolitan area during the st-
rike was due to buying in the su-
burbs. Sales in the downtown area
actually declined by $35 million.
Editor and Publisher says editor-
ially: The Michigan State analysis
is one of the greatest testimonials
for newspaper advertising that has
ever been written .... It adds to the
growing volume of data showing
that wherever a community is de-
prived of Its newspapers all bus-
iness suffers.
.... That when general business con-
ditions are good customers do not
just naturally garvitate to a store.
They have to be attracted by adver-
tising, particularly newspaper ad-
vertising. People react to a sales
message in newspapers. They do not
react if a sales message and/or the
newspaper is missing. Newspapers
are essential to the economic well
being of the business community.
That goes for the smaller papers
as well as the larger ones- and for
the villages as well as the metro-
politan centers of population.
Figure Servings
When Buying Meat
To select the best beef buy for
the food budget, figure the number
of servings from each pound to
find the actual cost of the various
cuts. Servings determine the actual
cost, according to extension foods
and nutrition specialists.
One beef cut may cost more per
pound than another cut ... but
in the end will give more servings
per pound and at a lower cost per
serving than the cheaper cut.
Pay j&rticular attention to ap-
pearance of the meat. High quality
beef has certain characteristics that
indicate top grade.
A large amount of meat in rela-
tion to bone.
A fairly thick coating of firm,
creamy-white fat.
Lean that is firm and fine-tex-
tured.
Fair amount of marbling . . .
little treaks of fat intermingled
with the lean.
Red porous bones.
Lower grades of beef have less
fat and the fat is yellowish in
color. The texture of the lean is
coarser than top-grade lean. Often
this beef has a duller appearance
to the flesh than higher grade beef.
