HOLLYWOOD—The Oscar cam-
paign will begin just as soon as
the holiday season is over. By the
end of the year (1963), every film
with a chance, every performance
of Academy Award caliber will
have had an outing at a New
York and Hollywood theater, the
condition for eligibility. Two years
ago I was 100 per cent right in
my winning predictions. Last year
I was pretty bad. Let's see how
good or bad I can be for the
cream of the 1963 crop.
There have been eight out-
standing pictures this year. Some
were made in Hollywood, some on
location in the United States,
some abroad. Here we go: Tom
Jones; Hud. The Victors; Ameri-
ca, America; It's a Mad, Mad,
Mad, Mad World; The Cardinal;
How the West Was Won. The
$40 million "Cleopatra" must be
included if only because it is the
most expensive picture ever made
anywhere.
You usually find the best per-
formances in the best pictures,
but not necessarily. I believe that
Albert Finney and Paul Newman
will be nominated for Tom Jones
and Hud. And that Rex Harrison
has a good chance for the role of
Caesar in Cleopatra. But Jack
Lemmon should also be nominat-
ed for his one-man tour de force
in Irma La Douce, although I
was not madly enthusiastic over
this very successful film. Richard
Harris, I hope, will be accoladed
for his convincing portrayal in
Thia Sporting Life.
In my opinion, Leslie Caron
and Natalie Wood will be fight-
ing it out for the best perform-
ance by an actress, Leslie for her
wonderful emoting in The L-
Shaped Room; Natalie for her
end-of-the-year Love With the
Proper Stranger. Jeanne Moreau
was marvelous in The Victors, as
was Geraldine Page in Toys in
the Attic (which reminds me,
Dean Martin's performance in
this picture could give him a no-
mination'. Also Sidney Poitier in
Lilies of the Field.
I have run out of top actresses,
but perhaps Shirley (Irma La
Douce- McLaine, to make up the
five. And, who knows, Debbie Rey-
nolds may get a bid, although I
did not care for her performance
in How the West Was Won.
There is no point in going be-
yond John Huston for the best
supporting performance by an ac-
tor. He was simply great as the
bishop in The Cardinal.
And Pat Neal as the best sup-
porting actress of the year. If
you saw her in the role of the
servant girl in Hud, you know
what I am talking about. Then
there is Margaret Rutherford, at
70 - something, acting rings a-
round Elizabeth Taylor and every-
one else except Margi Smith in
The V.I.P's. We have to give Miss
Rutherford something at the Os-
car prize-giving in April. She has
revived the moviegoing habit, al-
most singlehandedly.
Whn were the great English-
speaking picture directors of 1963?
They are usually linked with the
great matures. Bui ; nmiinVim
does rrst always follow. This is
surprising. How cm you have a
great film without a great direc-
tor? This year, the two top dir-
ectors in my opinion do follow

the film: Tony Richardson for
Tom Jones and Marty Rltt, who
directed Hud. It will be close.
But if there is an edge, I believe
it will be on the side of Mr.
Ritt. Hud was beautifully direct-
ed without a moment's letdown.
Two producers who directed
their films should also be among
the favored five, Carl Foreman
and Stanley Kramer.
Vittorio De Sica was in charge
of the Joe Levine film, Yesterday,
Today and Tomorrow. I have not
yet seen this movie, which stars
Sophia Loren and Marcello Mas-
troianni. It will be released in
New York and Hollywood before
the 31st. And this could give us
two more star names, as well as
a director.
Then there are the foreign
films. I know which foreign pic-
ture will win the Oscar on a
night in April. 1965: Ingmar Berg-
man's The Silence. But we are
talking of April, 1964. The fight
in the foreign field will be be-
tween 8M- and Four Days in Na-
ples. And I believe that 8'i will
win.
I may be changing my mind
about all this before the Academy
Awards on April 13, 1964, but as
of now, this is my list.
