BUYING fishing tackle, a common
pastime each summer, is an
exasperating and confusing experience
if a person does not have the
time to sufficiently determine his real
needs as indicated by his usual fishing
habits. There is no need to buy
a surf-casting rod and reel when you
spend most of your time crappie fishing,
and the surf is no place to spend
days with a light casting outfit.
Basically, a person must first decide
what type of gear he prefersbait
casting, spinning, spincasting, or
trolling. There is specific equipment
made for each interest, and it is a
definite disadvantage to substitute.
One area that is especially critical
is the selection of a rod and the
matching of a reel, line, and proper
weight lures to the rod. Although
information supplied from major
manufacturers of fishing tackle will
usually shed some light on this subject,
a simple test will enable you
to match line and lures to any rod.
Rig the rod with a reel and line
in the usual manner and attach a
spring scale or balance to the free
end of the line. While a companion
holds the rod, pull out about two rod
lengths of line and tell your friend
to hold the reel to keep more line
from being played out.
Then, as your rod-holding buddy
holds the butt of the rod in a perfectly
vertical position, pull the scale
until the tip of the rod is at a right
angle to the butt. While holding the
rod in this position, read the pound
measurement on the scale. From here
on it's a matter of arithmetic.
For every pound of pull needed
to bend the rod at a right angle, allow
five pounds in the test strength
of your line, and one ounce in the
weight of your lures. Allow a 20 per
cent deviation either way on both
estimates.
In other words, if your rod has a
test curve of five pounds the proper
line weight would be 20 to 30 pounds
and the lure should never weigh
more than three ounces. A lighter
rod may prove out at three pounds,
requiring a line test of 12 to 18
pounds and lures less than three
ounces.
By using this simple procedure,
you can avoid breaking your rod by
attempting to cast too heavy a
weight. Also, rod and reel damage
may be avoided by limiting the use
of line that is too strong for the
equipment.
An experienced angler can approach
a rack of 100 rods and in a
few minutes pick one out that best
suits him, but inexperienced fishermen
- especially youngsters - soon
find themselves thoroughly confused.
Even the inexperienced can take a
big jump ahead with this simple,
easy test.
Big news from the Heddon people
is the return of four classic wood
lures. If you are like many anglers,
you have a few old favorite wooden
lures in your tackle box that are all
beat up, but you just can't bring
yourself to do without them. Now
Heddon has brought back the timetested
Vamp, Basser, Zaragossa, and
Jointed Vamp.
Triple-hooked lures receive special
treatment this year with the introduction
of a plastic weedless attachment
to certain lures in the Fred Arbogast
line. Most anglers know that
big bass like the weedy, brushy
places, but getting in there with a
treble-hooked lure is expensive. The
innovation is a simple plastic collar
on shank of the hook with three tentacles
that protect the points yet
slip out of the way when the fish
strikes.
