The nation needs around 1,500,000 homes. Mills are selling lumber at or near cost to
produce. Freight now amounts to $5.00 to $10.00 per thousand feet. Lumber cannot go
lower, in face of these facts, It may go higher. NOW is :the time to build. Any of our
yard managers will be glad to help you with your plans.

THE GUINEA HENS
IT WAS four days 8lnee the Guinea
Hens had been placed In the barn-
yard and the animals were still |ku;-
zllng over their queer looks.
"Who ever heard of hens with faces
like those?", said old Brown Hen. ,4So
white and those fiery red. ears. I think
they look frightful."
Just then Rod Booster came strut-
ting across the yard as fast as his
dign|$* would allow. "I have some
new#; for you," he said, pausing for
breath.
"There Is a circus down the road,"
he said, "and I heard th« farmer's i oy
'Wo sx/e .

say that he saw queer things tiuwn
there, and one was a clown with a
white face painted with red In places."
"Oh, those new hens look just like
that," broke in old Yelkm Hen. "Now
we know what they are. They are
clowns and came from the circus."
"Thejr better go back where they
came from," said old Yellow Hen, "for
iit> hi'ii in this barnyard will have any-
thing to do with them."
That night when the hens went tt
bed M was very, very dark, and thos«
tlujl had little one? cuddled them cloai
under their wings.
The new hens—they were t*uinet
Hens, which, of course, you hayt
guessed before ilds—went to bed awnj
up in the branches of die nearby tree;
as tftey always do, and If anything
disturbs them they quickly cry will
a loud squa$k something that souud>
like "0<> hack! Ot baQk."
Bob Dog. tlie t-oille, was asleep, ant'
he did rot hear n sound, but th«
Guineas did, ar.d in the middle of tht
night came their, loud cry of "Go back
U<> back !**
"Don't you know any tetter thaw t<
make that silly noise In the mlddh
of the night?* scolded Brown. Hen
"You are rightly unified Mowna, hot
I am sorry you are hens as wall."
Bob JDog awoke, too, «ud with i
bound out of his house he came bark
ing with all his might, and in a minuti
he had by the leg a 4nnn who had comt
creeping toward the henhouse to carry
off -i he hens in a l og.
After the excitement was over Bo!
Dog told the hens what had happened
and how the new hens had glvetf flu
warning or he might never have raught
the robber.
"If It wasn't for that awful cry they
make," said old Tellow Hen, after a
call on the Guineas; "they would be
very nice companions* and they art-
very genteel. I am sure."
"But It was the cry that saved u*
last night," said Mrs. Brown Hen. "1
shall never again Judge any one from
appearances."

All the sages are predicting an unusually cold win-
tei. They say that every natural indication points
to an extremely severe season right upon u£
If these predictions come true, it will be a wise man
who is well prepared for the long cold spell. Your
buildings will need to be in good repair and well
painted to withstand the wintry storms and cold.
Check up and note the things that are needed
around your place to make it absolutely ready for an
unusually cold spell. Then call on us.
It would also be a good idea to do over the wood-
work inside the home before the winter starts so
that it will be more attractive for the long indoor
months.
