Real Reformers
We always have with us the man
or woman who feels that he or she
possesses the solution to all the
perplexing problems of the times
A knowledge of some of the doc.
trines advanced .by theorists and
dreamers, a few phrases and words
picked up here and there alone
are needed to-formulate a plan fov
the reformation of society by these
people.
They always think in a nation-
al or international scope. They
never seem to give a thought to
the task of reforming their own
communitvy, or the things they
{LAN do, of the problems they un.
derstand. They would much rath-
er discuss problems and issues that
the greatest minds cannot fathom.
But fortunately we also have a
few practical reformers—people
who work to make the home town
a better place in which to live.

Entered as-second class matter
at the Post office at Follett, Tex-
as on July 31st 1918 under the
Act of Congress of March 3,1879. j We never think of thes-3 people as
ste 1 a ... ; t reformers, but reformers they are,
in the better sense. For they are
possibilities. They do not spend
their time in idle dreaming, in
speculating on changes and im-
provements that are too great for
their understanding. They recog.
nize the fact that reform and im
provements must begin at home.
Unconsciously they make them-
selves better citizens. Then con-
sciously they seek to make their
communities better places in which
to live.
Just-think of^his for a moment.
How will reform and improvement
ever be brought about? By dream-
ing, by specifk&tttn, by planning
radical changes in the entire eco-
nomic and social organization of
our nation? Never. It neveh has
come that way, and it never will
come that way.
If we are to dolour part in mak-
ing this a better nation, we must
first find ways of making Follett a
better city. If people everywhere
will do this, every small city and
every large city will steadily im,
prtWBj fcnd society itself will take
another step in the direction of a
Eutopia. We must take an act-
ive interest in our local govern
ment. We must, take pride enough
in our city to' see that it is at-
tractive, beautiful, inviting as a
plaee in which to live.
The past hundred years have
brought us a long way. Today
we all enjoy comforts that our
forefathers'could not regard even
as luxuries. We have developed a
sense of beauty, a desire to live
in more attractive surroundings.
We have come to recognize the im-
portance of culture, learning, ed-
ucation. Every young man or
woman has an! opportunity to at-
tend high school and college and
secure the knowledge which alone
is power.
But these changes have been
brought about through a growing
recognition of the fact that the
place to start, reforming society is
right at home. The people who
are interested in improving ti e
local schools, the local government
and the home town have accom-
plished these~chaages-for the bet
ter. We need more of them. Re
formers of this type are to be com-
mended. But let's not call them
reformers. Let's simply call them
community builders.

What About It?
A woman 4s a person a citizen,
and in an intelligent democracy,
ought to have the same rights
and privileges as a man, for she
stands for the human side of
tiiifrfip. She is concerned for the
ttoHcers more than for the boss
and his profits; for the little chil-
dren in the fields and factories
more than for them that gain by
tkeir labor; for the well>being ot
the prisoner more than for the
prison system, Its cost and main-
tenance; for the public health
more than f r public office, for
good schools and good morals,
rather than partisan triumph.
Government exists not alone for
business, for better priees, fat
farms and sky-high buildings; it
exists for human beings; it exists
primarily for children, and it is
time the mother of those ehildren
be set free to enjoy the full rights
and dutiea of citizenship, and be
welcomed to a seat at the council
table of the state and nation.—
Cappers Weekly.
