The Bastrop Public Schools
opened Monday with a total
registration of 1901, according
to information received from
the office of Superintendent
Charles Evans. The total
registration during the. second
week of school last year was
1953, and there are indications
that this years total will
exceed the 1975 total.
Broken down, the total
number included 627 in High
School; 483 in Junior High; 429
in the Elementary School, and

donations during the Jerry
Lewis Labor Day Telethon.
He has set a goal for las 1976
Labor Day Telethon, and is
determined to surpass the
achievement of the 1975
Telethon, which raised a
record-breaking Sl9-mi0ion to
benefit the Muscular
Dystrophy Association
(MDA). The marathon spec-
tacular, which will originate
from Las Vegas, will be seen
here over KTW, Channel 36,
beginning 8 pan., Sunday,
September 5, and continuing
until 5c 30 pjn., Monday,
September 6.
Ed McMahon will serve as
Jerry's anchorman at Del
Webb's Hotel Sahara in Las
Vegas. A glittering line-up of
top entertainers will appear
with them during the 11th

1/2 St. in Austin, died enroute to Bastrop
Memorial Hospital by Bsstrop Ambulance after
the car be was driving, pictured above, collided
with the car pictured below, about 6 o'clock
Sunday night. His wife who was with him, and a
Houston couple, Georgia and John Wiegman and
their son. in the car pictured below, were
carried by Bastrop Ambulance to Brackenridge
Hospital in Austin, treated and released. Mr.
and Mrs. GeO bad just been married.

Although the Junior High
School, which has been
remodeled and enlarged, is not
completed, the class rooms and
other necessary rooms in the
facility are usable. The new
cafeteria is not completed,
however, and lunches will be
served in the old cafeteria until
it is ready. After its
completion, students who
leave the campus during the
lunch period will be required
to have written permission
from their parents to do so.
The gym-auditorium wiO not
be usable for some time.
Art Studio
Opens In
Elgin
Books, et Cetera, 103 West
Second, Elgin, owned and
operated by Mr. and Mrs.
Edward Fraim has been
enlarged to incorporate an Art
Studio. The first art class was
held in the new studio on
September 1.
Mr. and Mrs. Fraim bought
the' Faith Book Store h
January from Mr. and Mrs.
Bobby Milam Still operated
primarily as a religious book
store, the Fraims named their
store Books, et Cetera to more
fuDy describe the

chwch and Bible school needs,
gift books, greeting cards,
sacred and popular music on
tape and album, some crafts,
aid a full line of artists'
supplies.
A few weeks ago the Fraims
dedded to ask their landlord,
Charlie Smith, to prepare the
vacant area behind their store
for a workroom where various
kinds of meetings, workshops
and art and craft chases could
be held. Mrs. Joseph O'Connor
supervised the preparation of
the room to be used as an art
studio. Mrs. (/Connor will
teach classes on Mondays and
Tuesdays each week. Mrs.
Sophie Slaughter of Austin
wil teach <« Wednesdays and
possibly other days if there is
interest.
"We have been overwhelm-
ed by the response to our store
and the studio. Mr. Fraim said,
"We had no idea when we
bought the store that so many
people, not only in Elgin, but
from the s mounding sreas ss
weD, would give such gs norma
support."

City Works On
Drainage Funds
"We are still trying to keep
our request for drainage funds
active and attended a session
with HUD in San Antonio on
the 23 rd." Mayor James P.
Sharp reported this week.
"We might be simply going
through the motion, but we
refuse to give up the fight. We
need the funds and they realize
it," he said.

that the Federal regulations of

of the ssrviee available at Bastrop MsmortiU Hospital for
patisnts who need immediate, frequently life-saving treatment,
in a Medical Center. As part of the Military Emergency
Transfer Service, the local hospital is folly equipped to handle
the landing of a helicopter which, if necessary, Is supplfad by a
military service, and can move a patient into 8an Antonio in a
matter of minutes. Though the Hospital has had the service
available for some time, Ben Snead, Hospital Administrator,
said, H had been used only onee. but that once saved a nun's
life. It is well to know that life-saving treatment is available
quickly and effectively if needed from the Bastrop Hospital.
