When the Soviets were running a
space station about two years ago,
Lubbock ham Kim Forgey talked with
them as they came across the hori-
zon.
The inventive mind which is
characteristic of many ham radio
operators has changed ham opera-
tions over the years. Gone are the
days when 200 watts worth of power
meant a home-built station so large
and heavy that it would take several
men to move it. Now, because of
miniaturization of circuitry, 200
watts of power can be picked up with
two fingers.
Lubbock ham radio operator
Rogers Orr comments that most, if
not all, recent developments in the
radio industry are being done by
amateurs. Hams are great experi-menters. Kim Forger, another ham
operator, agrees. "The amateurs pio-
neer on their own research that other
people say 'Gee, this is really im-
possible, you can't do that."
Ham radio operators have been in
Lubbock since the invention of the
radio. Ham radio operators have
strengthened this community in
many ways for they help Lubbock
reach the world.
