I PRINCIPAL'S POINTS
The Texas Legislature
requires all Texas Public
Schools to conduct a fit-
ness assessment on every
student. Albany ISD has
elected to use the Fitness
Gram Testing. The coaches
and teachers of physical ed-
ucation have received train-
ing in the administration of
the assessment and will
soon begin the program.
Students in grades 5 and
6 will begin during their
P.E. time this week. The
younger grades will follow
soon after. Coach Ginger
Norton hopes the students
will enjoy their participa-
tion in the Fitness Gram.
The assessment will not be
counted as a grade but is
designed to show a child's
physical strength and en-
durance. Results of the test-
ing must be reported to the
Texas Education Agency.
More TAKS testing in
on the way! Grades 3,4 and
6 will take the mathemat-
ics assessment on Tuesday,
April 29. Reading for 4th
and 6th, as well as the 5th
grade retest will be given
on April 30. The science test
for 5th graders is scheduled
for May 1. Your support for
our students and teachers
is greatly appreciated dur-
ing this stressful time. We
know our students are well
prepared and have been
given the tools to succeed
on the test if they choose to
use them.
Mr. Viertel is preparing
the kindergarten through
4th graders for the upcom-
ing spring musical. We look
forward to seeing them
perform on Tuesday, May 6,
at 7:00 p.m. in the Albany
High School Gym. Please
mark your calendar for this
important event.
Fourth grade had a great
time celebrating different
cultures last week. Students
brought articles from home
that illustrated a different
culture. Some of the things
that were shared with the
other students Were: Pfir-
sich Kuchen (German peach
cake); a German Cuckoo
Clock, Mexacali Corn Chips
and Picante Sauce; articles
from Belin, Africa; Irish
Leprechaun Folktales; ar-
ticles from Toga, Africa;
Soda Bread from Ireland; a
French Tart (apple upside
down cake); and a Mexican
flute. The fourth grade
teachers appreciate the co-
operation of the parents in
assisting their child with
this important activity.
* COUNSELOR'S CORNER
April has been declared
National Financial Literacy
Month. What a great time to
teach your kids about loans!
Many parents wonder if it is
a good idea to loan money to
your children. The authors
of Love and Logic say yes.
If your kids will need to
know about loans as adults,
they need some practice
with small loans. Jan proud-
ly told her friend that she
had just repossessed a $189
camera from her son.
"Oh, that's terrible. How
could you ever do that?"1 re-
sponded her friend.
"My son was really lucky,"
said Jan. "We make loans to
our son just the same way
the bank does it. Now, at
age 12, he understands all
about collateral and the re-
sponsibility of paying back
his loans. Compare that to
my neighbor's 21-year-old
kid. His parents always
let him off the hook for his
loans and he had' to learn
when the price was higher.
The finance company just
repossessed his $17,000 car.
I think my child got a real
bargain. Don't you?"
Lions Roar earns Gold Star
Project Grad tourney set
Plans for the 21st annual
Project Graduation at Alba-
ny High School are progress-
ing well, and organizers are
continuing to gather funding
for the 2008 event.
The all-night graduation
party will be held at the high
school campus on Friday,
May 30 following the com-
mencement and reception.
"Bon Voyage Cruise Line"
has been chosen as the theme
of this year's event.
Golf Tournament
The Project Graduation
committee is planning one
more major fundraiser, a
three-person golf scramble
on Saturday, May 10 at the
Albany Golf Club. The entry
fee is $150 per team, with
cash prizes to be given.
For more information, call
the clubhouse at 762-2844 or
Ronnie Kitchens, 762-3766
or 725-6237.
More Funding Needed
Although initial response
to request letters has been
good, overall chair Jana
Kitchens said Tuesday that
party funding is still needed.
"We're moving along pretty

well, but we don't want to
stop short of what we need.,"
Around $15,000 will be
required to fund the event.
Anyone who would like
to make a donation can mail
it to PO Box 976, Albany
TX 76430 or give it to Terri
Anderson at First National
Bank or Kitchens at First Fi-
nancial .Bank.
Senior Events
Kitchens also asked that
senior parents be ready to
meet soon to discuss other
upcoming senior events,
such as the Progressive Din-
ner and the reception held
after graduation.
She also reminded par-
ents to get photos of their
seniors to Karen Noble as
soon as possible for the com-
mencement slide show.
Other baby photos will be
needed by The Albany News
for the graduation section.
The staff of the Albany High
School newspaper learned this
weekend that the newspaper
had been awarded the presti-
gious "Gold Star Award" by the
Interscholastic League, given
to only six papers statewide in
all classifications, and thought
to be the first one ever given to
a Class 1A publication.
AHS yearbook and news-
paper staff members were
also awarded several individ-
ual statewide awards during
the Interscholastic League
Press Conference (ILPC) held
April 19-20 in Austin.
Nine students attended the
conference, which included
instructional sessions along
with the awards ceremony.
Yearbook sponsor Sunny
Fuentes and newspaper spon-
sor Donnie Lucas accompa-
nied the students.
Newspaper Recognition
The Gold Star award plac-
es the local high school news-
paper in the top one percent
of school papers in the entire
state, according to ILPC di-
rector Jeanne Acton.
Only 45 newspapers from
all classifications were even
nominated for Star Awards,
and of those, 29 were selected
to receive either a Gold, Silver
or Bronze, explained Acton.
The Lions Roar earned a
Bronze Star in 2006 and a Sil-
ver Star in 2007, and stepped
up to a Gold Star this year,
one of only six awarded.
"These kids from Albany put
out a product that is as good as
or better than some of the huge
schools with really big staffs
and a lot more resources,"
Acton said. "It's a very solid
staff and Donnie pulls amaz-
ing things from these students
year after year."
Acton was also compli-
mentary of sophomore Mary
Garvin, who earned the dis-
tinction of "Tops in Texas" for
her feature writing entries.
"Tops in Texas" awards are
selected from the seven stu-
dents from all classifications
of schools whose entries place
first in each of the irfdividual
categories. Judges review
them to choose the top writer
or photographer overall.
"Mary is a good feature
writer with a real knack for
storytelling," commented Lu-
cas. "She was picked for her
story about Kirstin Noble,
which was very compelling."
In individual categories,
the Lions Roar staff received
11 first place awards, 16 sec-
ond and three third, along
with one honorable mention.
"Gold Stars are reserved
for so few papers and there
are some really good school
papers out there," said Lucas.
"I'm very proud of the kids."
Yearbook Honors
For the fifth year in a row,
the AHS yearbook won a Cer-
tificate of Achievement, the
second highest rating. The
2006-2007 edition was sub-
mitted forjudging.
Members of the AHS year-
book staff also received a
number of individual awards.
Most of the top places
again went to schools that
have all-color yearbooks, said
Fuentes, and the 2006-2007
yearbook that was entered
in this year's ILPC judges
was still mostly in black and
white, although the school
plans to change to full color
for the next school year.
The ILPC is an affiliate of
the UIL.
