was usually over in five days.
The supplies brought back to Shafter were for the general store which
was called La Raya, which meant the charge it. It was operated by George
Cline. Bentura enjoyed bringing supplies to Shafter ten times more than
he did hauling loads to Ruidosa. Going to Ruidosa was hard work. The
roads were extremely dangerous especially when it rained. On some particular
spots Bentura and Leonardo had to get off the wagons and help the
mules up the steep hills and would then jump on to apply the brake to go
down hill. At other times when the wagons were overloaded, the men would
unload half the wagon, would get the teams and wagons up the hill, then
would come back for the rest of the loadvon foot. This was work! The
Shafter road was rough but nowhere ae near[as this one.
Bentura and his helper had to set camp overnight many times during
these trips. The men traveled all day at a slow pace. On some days they
made better time than others, according to their luck. They traveled
until sundown. They had a lot of fun together sometimes, and shared
many adventures camping overnight 4n the hills.
When leaving for these trips, special preparations had to be made.
Bentura's wife, Angela had to prepare plenty of food for them, for the job
was hard and they got very hungry. The goods that were packed by Angela,
were bacon, beans, rice, potatoes and anything they could get to give them
plenty of energy. Extra clothes were taken to change when they were dirty
or wet by rain. Cooking utensils and a rifle wfe- very important. The
rifle they took was a big one and very powerful. That gun is now a family
treasure. This gun was very important because it sometimes came in handy
when wild animals tried to get the food or upset the mules. Then they
