quenily rode iuto Winchester
with his habit and somewhat
long hair trailing in tbe wind.
He. was oue of the most widely
known ladies in the valley.
Xn addition to good birth aud
iuherited acres, h« developed
remarkable talent for a woman,
when reveraes in the family for
tune rendered it necessary for
some oue to put a shoulder to
the wheel. His sisters were
dibtinguished for their culture
aud personal charms, aud sev
, era! of them married prominent
gentlemen. Mr. Rebecca Payne
devoted bimself to the manage
ment of a farm and to the super
vision of a stote which he had
established at 'Rest,' where he
also held the appointment of
postmistress He also dealt In
cattle and horses, aud became
an export in that way. All his
enterprises prospered, and he
bas acquired oousidei able
wealth. ,
Determining to marry be
threw off his dresses and appli-
ed for a license from the court
at Winchester. But the aston-
ished clerk, who* like every-
body else, knew him as a worn
au,4«tUued to issue a license
for a woman to marry a woman,
when Payne proved bis real
sex by a certilioate from Dr. W
P. Maguire of Winchester. li-
cense was still refused on tbe
ground that Virginia law com-
pelled a mafl to have iciven
names which show his sex be
fore he can act as a mao before
the law. Payne then determined
to have his name changed at
the March term of the court.
The affair is a nine day's
wonder in the Shenandoah, aud
has created more excitement
than any event which lias dis
turbed the social rlrcles of the
State for a half century. No
explanation has b*wn otfeied as
to why he masqueraded so loir-
«a a woman. Rumor has
that Payne and bis weetli art
