Several members of the
Albany Study Club met with
Shackelford County Com-
missioners during a Tuesday
morning meeting on May 13
to request permission to be-
gin extensive renovations at
the county library.
According to club represen-
tatives Carolyn Waller, Sandi
Conway and Tracy Bartee,
the organization is obtaining
private funding along with
grants for the improvements,
which are estimated to cost
around $300,000.
Waller explained that
the club, which has coordi-
nated the operation of the
county-owned library for
five decades, is not seeking
additional county funding
beyond the amount already
committed, but simply needs
permission to pursue bids for
the renovations.
According to Waller, the
group plans not only to make
much-needed repairs to the
1920s-era building, but also
construct an addition and
add handicap accessible re-
strooms and a paved parking
area.
The club members have
already been in communi-
cation with Dale Sellers of
Phoenix Construction, a com-
pany that specializes in the
restoration of historic build-
ings, including the Shackel-
ford County Courthouse.
Since the library is owned
by the county, the commis-
sioners and Study Club rep-
resentatives discussed legal
procedures for bidding.
The commissioners agreed
that the organization could
proceed with plans for the
renovation and restoration
of the library, with County
Judge Ross Montgomery act-
ing as a liaison between the
club and the court.
Digital Tower
County Emergency Offi-
cer Tom Hart informed the
commissioners that the state
had mandated that county
radio towers be updated from
analog to digital technology.
The cost of a new tower is
approximately $6,250, which
would be paid by the state if
very specific conditions are
met.
A $58,000 grant for new
radios is also available.
No action was taken, with
the commissioners planning
to address the issue dur-
ing budget talks later in the
year.
Other Business
• An election to decide the
issue of local option liquor
sales was set for Tuesday, No-
vember 4, the same date as
the General Election, rather
than sometime this summer
as was first reported.
• County Treasurer Sher-
ry Enloe explained again that
IRS auditors will be check-
ing for personal cell phone
usage, as well as mileage on
county-owned vehicles and
the county's per diem policy.
Enloe was instructed to ob-
tain several more pieces of
information so that commis-
sioners can make a decision
at the next meeting.
• Abattery-operated buzz-
er will be installed at the
handicap accessible door on
the north side of the Court-
house for those who have
trouble opening the large
door.
• The county will adver-
tise for bids to make repairs
on a building used to store
county records.
• The commissioners of-
ficially approved a contract
for a $159,964 grant from
the Office of Rural Commu-
nity Affairs that will pay the
county's 25 percent portion of
almost $600,000 in damages
from last summer's flooding;
• The commissioners
cided that they would not
yet reinstate the burn ban.
County citizens need to con-
tact the sheriff's office before
beginning any burn projects
USDA COMMODITIES

Tuesday that this will be the
last food distribution until

lizes students in Albany High
School ag classes to help sort

"We'll still have six distri-
butions this year, but instead
of every other month, they
are scheduled a little differ'
ently," explained Harris. ,

December along with this

Any county residents iflj
