Founders praised during January harmony club meeting
By Lenore Brieger
The Harmony Club of Bastrop
met January 19, in the home of Eva
Phillips for a luncheon and pro-
gram in honor of the founders of
the c|ub in 1900.
During the buffet members were
given the opportunity to become
better acquainted with new
members, Eula Bishop, Mrs. John
Hargrave, Mrs. Harris Jacqmin,
Jeanne Meginnis, Mrs. Charles
Neal and Mrs. Lamar Wiginton.
Using the theme "The Opulent
Era", Barbara Steymann and Eva
Phillips used their collective talents
to provide a educational and
musical afternoon. Mrs. Steymann
provided biographical notes on the

club's founders including Mrs. O.
B. Orgain and her daughter, Dru
Ransome, and Mrs. O. P. Jones.
Mrs. Orgain was a solo per-
former on the piano, served as a
trustee of Southwestern Universi-
ty and held high office in three
patriotic organizations. Drucilla
Orgain Ransome (1879-1975) was
a fine musician, talented in both
piano and organ. Like her mother,
she was a working member of
every cultural organization in the
community. Afater her church, her
greatest love was the Harmony
Club.
The owner of three pianos, her
square grand once belonged to
Governor Sayres and is now a
treasure of the Bastrop Historical
Society.
Mrs. O. P. Jones (Mollie Belle
Moore 1872-1961) was a teacher
in Bastrop and organist in her
church. She also gave private
lessons and composed music. One
of her songs, "The Lone State of
Texas" was the official school
song for years. The Harmony Club
honors her memory yearly through
the "Jones Award" in recognizing
the Bastrop High School musician
of the year.
At the age of 85, she taught
class of 11 piano students.
Mrs. Phillips played composi-
tions which included "Evening
Star", "Bourree", "Barcarolle"
from Tales of Hoffmann and
"Capriccio" by Brahms.

SIXTY YEARS AGO, very little sweet
corn was grown in Texas and the rest of
the South, although corn long had been
used as human food, primarily as grits
and corn meal.
Several reasons existed for not growing
sweet corn but the main one was that
farmers had no adapted varieties, espe-
cially ones that could cope with the corn
ear worm.
In 1927, the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station began a
sweet corn breeding program and by the early 1930s, had produced
Honey June and Surcropper Sugar, two varieties that had long,
tight shucks that protected them from the corn ear worm.
Today, sweet corn is widely produced in Texas and the South as
"roasting ears," as well as canned and frozen corn. Modern Texans
can't remember a time when these favorites were not readily
available.
\
A HUNDRED YEARS ago, cattle in much of the South suffered
from a disease variously called Southern Cattle Plague, Spanish
Fever, Splenic Fever, Acclimating Fever and Texas Cattle Fever.
It eventually came to be called Texas Fever because of its spread
when Texas cattle were trailed North to market.
Native cattle, such as the Longhorn. were resistant to the disease
but introduced cattle, such as the Hereford, Shorthorn and others,
were highly susceptible and usually died when infected.
An Experiment Station veterinarian in Texas, Dr. Mark Francis,
discovered the vector was a tick that transmitted the disease.
Francis also researched dips and dipping vats for controlling ticks
on livestock.
He also developed a way to inoculate susceptible cattle with the
blood of resistant cattle, and the disease was eventually brought
under control. \
His work saved livestook producers millions of dollars, enabled
Southern cattlemen to upgrade their herds, and helped them
