cal square dancing, eat together
and have a party, organizers
said. Guest groups included

LCRA okays water rate hike
Lower Colorado River Authority
directors approved increases
March 23 in its water rates for
1989, the first such increase in six
years.
Rates for most municipal, in-
dustrial and irrigation customers
will increase about 14 percent from
$68.50 to $78.20 per acre-foot; or
24 cents per 1000 gallons, up from
21 cents per 1,000.
Directors also approved a new
"interruptible water" rate of $4.50
per acre-foot. Interruptible water
will be sold on an annual basis,
with no guarantee that the supply
will be available on a long term
basis.
Rates LCRA charges for cooling
water for its power plants, in-
cluding the Ferguson and Gideon
plants and the Fayette Power Pro-
ject, will increase by 85 percent,
from $10 to $18.50 per acre-foot,
a first step in bringing these rates
in line with other firm water
customers.
"These increases are needed to
help pay for LCRA's costs of pro-
viding service to our water
customers,"said Bill Freeman,
LCRA executive director of cor-
porate services.
Freeman said LCRA has con-
sulted with its customers in
developing the rate structures and
financial projections for water
revenues.
He said LCRA has worked with
rice farmers, for whom water is a
major business cost, to minimize
the impact of the rate increase.
LCRA proposes to meet irrigation
demands first by using run of the
river water, to which the rice
farmers have independent water
rights. They will be charged for the
usage of interruptible stored water
and costs of transportation from the
river to the rice farmers.
The increase in rice farmers'
rates for the next year will be
limited to 7 percent.
"LCRA's long term goal is to
adjust its water rates so that they
fully pay for our cost of providing
such services," Freeman said.
"We anticipate this process will
take several years, and the rate
structure just approved by the
Board applies only to the current
year.
"The need for future increases
depends on future demands for
water, and for the revenues LCRA
will need to meet those demands.
Our intent is to phase in any addi-
tional increases over a reasonable
period of time in order to minimize
their impact on our customers as
much as possible."
Democrats to discuss campaigns
Bastrop County Democrats will
gather for the first time since last
November's general election to
discuss plans for the 1989-1990
campaigns.
The meeting is scheduled for
Thursday, April 13 in the Com-
munity Room of the First National
Bank in Bastrop at 7 PM.
Democratic chairman Dan Buie
of Elgin said in a letter to over 200
party supporters, "I want to thank
you for helping Democrats win 18
of 19 precincts in Bastrop County
literally reversing the presidential
ticket outcome of 1984 and putting
a 'lock' on down-ballot victories
for all 1988 local party nominees."
Bastrop County delivered 56
percent of the vote to the
Democrat's Presidential ticket.
Buie reminded letter recipients,
however, that the local party spent
over $1,100 in a "Get Out The
Truth" Campaign during the
general election. The effort left the
party with a small debt.
In an appeal for contributions,
Buie asked for individual donations
which "will allow us to retire our
debt, pay the costs for this com-
munication and replenish our small
bank balance at First National Bank
Bastrop".
Those wishing to contribute
should send their donation to the
Bastrop County Democratic
Association, c/o Dr. Tom Walker,
Treasurer, 70 Porter Rd., Bastrop,
Tx. 78602.
Also at the April 13 party
meeting Democrats will establish
a regular monthly meeting schedule
and discuss plans for hosting
various activities to accommodate
Democratic candidates during the
primary season next fall and
winter.
A number of elected party and
public officials throughout the
county are expected to be in
attendance.
Spring cleanup wins kudo
Bastrop's annual spring cleanup
drive was a resounding success,
City Council Member Curtis
Sanders declared Monday.
"Just say thanks to the people,"
Sanders said. "There was a good
response to the cleanup."
An oversized commercial gar-
bage container at Chestnut Street
and Martin Luther King Jr. had to
be hauled away twice during the
drive, he said.
The effort also sent some dis-
carded furniture and appliances to
the dump, according to Sanders.
