STIRPES DECEMBER 1993
Connecting the Un-Connected Roberts Family
Benjamin to Daniel
By: Barbara Roberts Baylis
In researching the surname ROBERTS in New Hampshire, the recommended
place to start is the NEW HAMPSHIRE HISTORICAL SOCIETY at Concord. In the
Library are the five volumes of typescript on THE ROBERTS FAMILY by HENRY
WINTHROP HARDON written in 1933.1 Volume 1-3 Connected are those ROBERTS
he could document to THOMAS ROBERTS, the immigrant of 1633. Volumes 1 & 2
Unconnected are those he could not document to THOMAS ROBERTS. Mr. Hardon
gives an account of other sources of major research on the family in his introduction.
A family history of this magnitude is not without error. However, any Roberts
researcher should be grateful to Mr. Hardon for his time and thoroughness in
documentation and the additional information he gives in the Unconnected volumes.
There are corrections and additions written in pen, probably added by Mr. Hardon.
The LDS Church microfilmed this typescript. The film can be ordered at any Family
History Center of the Church, making this work available to anyone doing Roberts
research.2 The copy at the Historic and Genealogical Society of New England in
Boston, unfortunately, had pages shuffled making it very hard to use.
The object of this article is to present a preponderance of the evidence on the
parents of DANIEL ROBERTS of Lebanon, Maine. DANIEL is listed in the
UNCONNECTED VOLUMES by Mr. Hardon having no indication of parentage
suggested. His family history was submitted to Mr. Hardon for his typescript by
E. N. Spinney of Union, N.H. Land transactions, relationships with "Connected"
Roberts, and Roberts family naming patterns indicated that DANIEL of Lebanon was
very likely connected to the family of the immigrant THOMAS ROBERTS1 of Dover.
The only mention of DANIEL ROBERTS of LEBANON, MAINE in CONNECTED VOLUME
1 was under BENJAMIN ROBERTS4 of Dover, (THOMAS ROBERTS3, JOHN2,
THOMAS1). The search for DANIEL'S parentage began with BENJAMIN. To solve the
problem the search extended to examine every DANIEL ROBERTS contemporary with
DANIEL OF LEBANON and every BENJAMIN ROBERTS contemporary with BENJAMIN
OF DOVER. Research on all named descendants of THOMAS1 down to the sixth and
seventh generation was also necessary. There were several possibilities to the
parentage of DANIEL and all were explored. The question remained, "what about the
connection through land records of BENJAMIN to DANIEL OF LEBANON?"3 Going
back to the only concrete information available, a closer look at BENJAMIN OF DOVER
was necessary.
SERG'T THOMAS ROBERTS3 of Dover had three children by his unnamed first
wife: (1) LOVE (2) LYDIA and (3) TIMOTHY. After the death of his first wife he
remarried after 1703. His second wife was ELIZABETH (TUCKER) HOPLEY, the
daughter of JOHN and URSULA TUCKER of Portsmouth. ELIZABETH'S first husband6
