I stood in silence as the young man
began to pray inside of the Bexar
County Courthouse. This man was
not praying to be found innocent of a
crime by a jury of his peers or to
receive probation by a sympathetic
(Point
judge.
This man. who was in his early
20s, was praying for another reason-
-one of happiness. He knelt down in
from of his shoe shine stand inside of
the red brick building and thanked
"Give me this day, my daily bread...
with that day. As we move toward
the, holiday season, let's remember
gomeone who needs a helping a haml
,.and I won't forget to Thank You."
God for the money that heiiad earned
that day tofeed his wife and daughter.
As tins young man prayed, 1 thought
how jittle this man must have-he
only Shines tlie shoes of the notable
lawyers and judges who grace the
courthouse.. .The attorneys who want
to look their best from head to toe
standing in front of a jury, people
who may spend as much on drinks
with the guys as he makes in a day.
Yet, this young man found time to
give thanks.
Sometimes we may forget about
the little things in life-like sayings
thanks for what we were blessed
in jip^ing their. Thanksgiving or
Chfkjtmas brighter, and let's make;
the spirit of giving a central part of
our holiday spirit.

The redistricting plan for Senate
Districts 19 and 26 has drawn the ire
of State Rep. Karyne Conley, who
met with the Baptist Minister's Union
Tuesday to discuss the effect of the
plan which would split the East Side
into two separate Senate Districts,
idilming our voting strength and
numbers.
It began when Mexican American
Legal Defense and Educational Fund
To avoid going tocourt, MALDEF
and the Attorney General's office
agreed on this redistricting plan-
giving minorities the advantage in
Districts 19 and 26. However, mi-
norities may be somewhat of a
misnoer here, because these districts
will be around £5 percent Hispaniq.
As the district now stands,Senator
Frank Tejeda represented 19 while
Senator Cyndi Krier (Republican)
was in 26i Now Krier's district will
become 65 percent Hispanics and
Democratic. Her chances of being
re-elected are not good.
i.; Tejeda said he was glad to see a
minority district, but supports the
Efforts of the NAACP in fighting not
to split the Eastside vote-to put us
all in one district.
Conley wants the word out that
"we" are not going to let this matter
die.
I'm sure the Republicans or the
NAACP will file suit and a new plan
must be developed. Wha we must
do is become pro-active in this mat-
ter and let everyone who has a say in
this matter know how we feel. Do it
now!

"The Rigsby Courts Apartments are
such a small area, yet they take up
a lot of my court time," Rickhoff
said. "I've had two certifications in

Rickhoff emphasized that "this
court only hears child abuse and
delinquency cases. While all hous-
ing projects generate an occasional
case, I noticed the Rigsby referrals
jan to dominate the docket."
Banks was given probation for
auto theft and possession of a weapon
in 1989. The Judge warned Banks'
mother then that he would become a
murder statistic if they continued to
live in the Rigsby.
Rickhoff has been critical of the
Rigsby Apartments and would like
to see the housing project closed if
management cannot get things un-
der control. He held a meeting with
residents and others a few weeks
ago about the Rigsby and he has
even written the Housing and Urban
Development in hopes that they will

Tyler's goes
up in smoke
A popular Eastside club went up
in smoke Monday and a man had to
be rescued from the burning tavern.
Tyler's Place at 907 S. Pine sus-
tained about $28,000 in damages to
the building and contents, fire chief
Arthur Westhoek said.
Westhoek said the bar owner, who
lived next door to the club, rescued
at 11 a.m. Friday at Macedonia
Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry
Dailey officiating.
Edwards was employed as a youth
counselor at the East Side Boys and
Girls Club on Martin Luther King at
the time of his death.
"He will be greatly missed," dn
employee at the Boys and G iris Club
said Wednesday. "He was such an
outstanding young man. He in-
terned with us, then after he gradu-
ated, he came to work here."
Edwards was in charge of the flag
football program and worked in
several other areas with the youth.
He was born to Timothy and Lula
Edwards on July 5,1969 in Victoria,
Texas. His family moved to San
Antonio while he was still very
young.
He graduated from McCollum
High School in 1987 and received a
a man who uvea upstairs above the
bar by handing hirn a ladder to flee
from the fire and smoke.
Although it took only 15 minutes to
put out the blaze, it could have been
much worse.
Firemen disco\ ored that two fire
hydrants, one at Indiana and S. Pine
and the other at Utah and S. Pine
were not working. Firemen had to
connect hoses to a hydrant near by.
Westhoek did not know why the
hydrants were out of order, but City
Water Board was notified of the "no'
working" hydrants.

standing that the FBI investigation
did not reach any conclusion.
