SUNDAY
There will be a public
meeting on Sunday,
March 4 at 3 p.m. at
Sam Houston High
School, to discuss the
proposal by Mobil Oil to
put a new petroleum
storage tank on the East
Side close to four
schools. Sen. Frank
Thursday
Tejeda requested that
this meeting be held so
that the community
could have an
opportunity to express
their opinion on this
issue. This is an issue of
vital importance to the
safety of our
school children and our
community. Everyone is
encouraged to attend so
that we have a full
opportunity to protect
our community.

Gunshot victim stumbles in home, dies
Impressive rites for businessman
Hulan (Chilly Willie) Collins
Hulan Collins
Impressive obsequies
were held for well
known businessman Hulan
(Chilly Willie) Collins,
Wednesday, at Antioch
Baptist Church with the
Rev. J. J. Rector,
officiating.
Collins along with his
brother, Lee, operated
the Mustang Lounge.
Chilly Willy was born
Nov. 27, 1934 in Travis
County to Mr. and Mrs.
Hulan Collins, Sr.
He worked for Turbine
Support for 18 years and
was a disc jockey in 1969.
He is survived by his
wife Beverly; four
sons, Thomas, Bill,
Charles and Hulan, III;
three step children,
George, Garland and
Stephanie; mother, Mrs.
Lillie Collins; brothers,
Anthony, Lee and
Eugene; sisters, Ruby
and Ernestine; grandchild-
ren.
Interment was in
Meadowlawn Memorial
Park. Arrangements by
the Sutton Sutton
Mortuary.

The Jeff Davis Middle School put on an excellent
Black Heritage Program last week. The Eastside
Middle School kept their youngxaudience attention
during the program, which proved to be
entertaining and enlightening. Pictured above Mrs.

State Representative Karyne Jones Conley is shown
addressing a group of fourth and fifth graders at
Smith Elementary where she presented the school
with a check in the amount of $100. The funds will
be used to purchase incentives (awards, prizes, etc.l
for those students with per fee t attendance.
Rollback checks in the mail
The check is in the
mail. The City of San
Antonio mailed the city
rollback refund checks
Tuesday to some 217,000
homes. Amounts of the
rebates are expected to
range from a few cents
to $54,224, officials
said.
City property taxes
were due by Jan. 30 and
landowners who met the
deadline and paid the
full 12.1 percent tax
hike are entitled to a
refund.
Mayor Lila Cockrell
asked that those who
can afford it, give the
rebate checks to the
Library.
USAA received $26,576
and Southwestern Bell
was scheduled to receive
a check for $54,224.
Suspect
Police are searching
for a suspect in the
shooting death of a 24
year old East Side man.
Gregory Taplin, of the
2100 block of Lamar,
died from a bullet
wound to the chest.
A couple stepping out
to go to the store were
shocked with disbelief
when the victim
stumbled through their
front door and died in
their living room.
The victim died in the
200 block of Jordan

Village Apartments.
According to reports,
the man and woman
were standing on the
porch of their
apartment when they
heard the sounds of an
argument, followed by a
gunshot.
Police said the victim
was an associate of'the
couple, appeared out
of the darkness of an
alley. Police believe he
hau been shot in a
nearby parking lot.

CANADY IN RIVERSIDE
CALIFORNIA
Impressive rites were
held in Riverside, Calif,
for former San Antonian,
Mrs. Ruth Smith Canady.
Mrs. Canady was the
eight of 15 children born
to Tom and Martha
Smith in San Antonio.
She attended Brackenridge
Elementary School and
St. Philips High School.
She moved to
Riverside, Calif, in 1936
where she continued her
church work. In 1942,
she united with Park
Avenue Baptist Church.
She married Amborse
Canady in San Antonio
in 1916; they were
married 58 years, until
his death in 1974.
She is survived by
daughters, Beatrice
Carter and Lee Etta
Carter; sons in law,
Claude and Charles
Carter, Jr. of Riverside;
sister, Ethel Relford of
Chicago, 111. Mrs.
Canaday was the aunt of
Rev. J. C. Glosson of
San Antonio.,
VOTE ABSENTEE...VOTE ABSENTEE—VOTE...
The W. W. White Elementary School observed
Black History Month Wednesday with a special
program. Mrs. Frankie Wilson Williams, (1) fourth
grade teacher was the coordinator for the project.
She received a proclamation from Sharon Bell(r) of
the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for their
participation during Black History Month. Also
attending was the coordinator's mother, Mrs. Ruth
Ann Wilson and sister, AKA Soror Cophra Rector.

Final rites for Viola Richardson
born to Veronica and
Dominick Lewis.
She married Ben
Richardson in 1945. They
lived in Compton, Calif,
for 28 years.
She was known as
Grandma Rich, having
been the babysitter for so
many people during her
spirit filled life.
This union was blessed
with three children,
Bennie Odell Richardson,
preceded her in death.
She is survived by
daughter, Theresia R.
Ross; son, Benjamin
Richardson; two
grandchildren, sister,
other relatives and
friends.

Wednesday for Mrs. Viola
Richardson at New Mt.
Pleasant Baptist Church
with Rev. Franklin
Collins, officiating.
The decedent was born
in Carenco, La. in 1921.
