Black and red
must stand
together in the
struggle for
respect,
restitution, and
restoration
by Ron Daniels
As we celebrated the
500th anniversary ot
Christopher Columbus' so
called "discovery" ot
America, there was an
understandable upsurge ot
protest and resistance rising
up from among Native people
throughout this hemisphere
Most recently, in the I'nited
States, Native Americans
protested the tomahawk
chop" gesture used by the
Atlanta Brave's fans during
the World Series Native
Americans are also
demanding that the
Washington "Redskins"
change the name ot their
football team: The racist use
ot Indians as mascots and the
use of degrading images and
symbols to depict Native
Americans is commonplace in
I S. society This blatant
disrespect and disregard for
the indigenous people of this
country is a direct
consequence of the dominance
ot Eurocentric culture and the
existence of institutionalized
racixm in the I S. Hence the
history of the Native people of
this country is seen through
the eyes of the European
conquerors
When Columbus lirst
arrived in the Western
Hemisphere there were 40
million Native Americans in
North America. The brutal
conquest and colonization of
the Americans which was
ignited by the explorations of
Columbus resulted in the
elimination ot whole nations
of indigenous people from the
face of the earth. Millions ot
indigenous people were
casualties of forced labor,
alien European diseases and
<)titright murder on a mass
scale. All of this death.
destruction and genocide was
perpetrated in the quest for
precious metals, profitable
cash crops and raw materials,
and the glorious mission of
"christianizing" the savage.
1492 Is not a date for
commemoration or celebration
for the indigenous people of
this hemisphere.
In North America, what
began as a welcome ceremony
at Plymouth Rock b\ Native
Americans for a beleaguered
band of pilgrims from strange
land, soon turned into a
betrayal of Native People.
The puritanical foreigners
from Europe imbued with a
zealous "Protestant Ethic"
pushed their "heathen"
benefactors from the land.
Hence the Thanksgiving that
commemorates the sur\ ival of
the pilgrims ventured here in
search of religious freedom is
a day of mourning for Native
People: a dreadful occasion
which symbolizes the history
of betrayal and subjugation of
Native People in their own
country.
It is'a history marked by
the seizure of all Native lands
by invading Europeans and
the forced confinement of
Native People to the wretched
reservations where they were
sent to dv. lime and time
again the U.S. government
violated treaties signed with
Native nations to
accommodate the greed of
land speculators and mining
interests seeking to exploit
newly discovered minerals,
precious metals or raw
materials. The trail of broken
treaties was often blazed by
professional bounty hunters
who murdered Native People
and turned over their bodies
or "redskins" to unscrupulous
authorities for blood mone)
Native People were forced to
make room for white people
at all cost, and the price ws
and continues to be
horrendous.
This nation, being the
settler colony that it was is,
can never fulfill itself as a
great nation until the crimes
and injustices heaped upon
Native Americans are fully
recognized and restitution anil
restoration is forthcoming
The strident demand by
Native Americans for
recognition, respect,
restitution, restoration and
justice is not their struggle
alone. All people of
conscience and good will who
are committed to building a
new America must stand with
Native People as they force
\merica to face it's history.
A process of complete
atonement must be
consummated
African Americans in
particular have a special duty
and obligation to identify w ith
and support the demands ot
Native Americans for justice.
African Americans were also
victimized by the colonization
and conquest of this
hemisphere. The
Trans-Atlantic slave trade-
sparked by the European
invasion of the Americas
resulted in the deaths of some
100 million Africans.
During the long travail ot
slavery, however, run away
African slaves could always
count on safe haven among
Native Americans. Indeed,
the U.S. government waged a
war against the Seminole
Nation because of the refusal
of the Seminoles to turn over
fugitive slaves to the
authorities I ntold thousands
of Africans-lived with Native
Americans, intermingled and
intermarried with them to
such a degree that the blood
of Native People flows in the
veins of millions of African
Americans
African Americans also
understand the burden of
racism and cultural
aggression. Black people
have had to tight against
degrading images like Amos
and Andy, Stepin Eetchit, and
white minstrels in blackface.
Respect, recognition,
restitution and restoration are
also central goals in the
struggle for black liberation.
So as a matter of blood
common history , ancestry
and principle. Black and Red
should stand together in the
forefront of the struggle to
rectify the history of this
country and shape a new
\merican Nation, a new
society based on truth, justice
and the complete recognition
of and restoration of all the
people who have been
victimized by a racist and
exploitive society.
