Not lon^ ago someone was in
trodueed to rrie as a fellow
Presbyterian from Breekenridge.
"You have a very fine pastor
there in Breekenridge," I said. "I
would not know," came the reply.
The man who had introduced him
was perplexed and said, "I
thought you said you were a
f'reshyterian. I said I was a
f'reshyterian, said the man, "I
did not say I went to the
f'reshyterian Churrh
The world is filler) with theo
retical Christians. We have all
met them They say they are
Christians hut do not live and act
as Christians Yes, f believe in
(iod and in Jesus Christ," they
say. Hnt then they live as if then-
were no (iod never coming to
worship ffirri. praise dim, he a
part of His people, or serve ffirri.
Other theoretical Christians go
to church, and if asked would tell
you that Cod is their first priori
ty, then their families. . Hut
when asked how much time they
spend with (iod daily in prayer
and reading the Scriptures, it is
found they spend little if any and
what little time they do spend is
ritualistic and empty. When
asked how they serve the Lord or
hear witness to ffim, they have no
reply except a blank incredulous
face or a list of excuses.
Then there are those theore
tical Christians in the church who
know exactly what Christ would
have the church do and what the
Lord would have them do in the
church They even go so far as to
vote that the church do these
things. Rut when it comes timeac
tually to do them, they apologize
and excuse themselves because
they have more important com
mit ment s (see Luke 11:15 24).
Such people know Christianity
is true and have the truths of
Christianity filed in their brains,
but those truths never make it in
to their lives. They know Chris
tian theory, but they fail to live it.
They know what they are sup
posed to do. They can tell you
what they are supposed to do.
They just fail to do it.
James warns us, "Fte ilners of
the word, and not hearers only,
deceiving yourselves." (1:22)
"Deceiving yourselves" about
what? "Deceiving yourselves"
about being saved, about being a
Christian, about having eternal
life. Jesus said, "not everyone
who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall
by members of t hi
enter the kingdom of heaven, but
he who iliu s the will of my Father
who is in heaven " (Matthew 7:211
"Rut," the theoretical Christian
will protest, "I beiieve in (iod,
that Jesus Christ is the only Son
of (iod. Is that not enough?" To
which the Scriptures answer,
you lii'hcvi' that (iod is one; you
do well. Even the demons he lie re
and shudder .as the body
apart from the spirit is dead, so
faith apart from works is dead
(James 2:19, 26)
Theoretical Christians are not
real Christians According to
Jesus Christ and the Rible then-
are no t heoretical Christ ians, only
l>r<ictiriv<i Christians those
who live out their faith through a
personal discipleship to Jesus
Christ; those who live out their
lives under the Lordship of
Christ; those who unashamedly
bear witness to their Lord and
serve Him in all that they do and
say; those who spend time with
the Lord iri prayer and reading
His Word; those who love to wor
ship and praise the Lord; those
who are a part of His people, the
Church, and a part of Christ's
ongoing ministry through the
church; those who do the work
which Christ has called them to
do, the work of helping the needy,
comforting the afflicted, feeding
the hungry, caring for the out
casts, protect ing t he helpless, and
sharing the Good News of the
(iospel.
It is impossible to be merely a
theoretical Christian, because
Christianity is not merely a
theory. Christianity is not merely
a set of beliefs to be filed away in
your brain for safe keeping. Chris
tianity is not merely saying the
right things or knowing the right
beliefs, but living them Chris
tianity is a life to be lived And if
it is not lived, it is not life but
death. Do not he deceived, "faith
apart from work-- is dead " A faith
which is not lived, is no faith at all
it is a deadly decept ion.
Have you been deceived? A
theoretical Christian is no real
Christian, because Christianity is
not merely a theory to be con
templated, it is a life to be lived
CARD OF THANKS
We would like to say a special
thank you for all the prayers,
phone calls, visits, and food We
would ask for your continued
prayers for us.
May (iod bless you all.
