It'* not true, of course. That
the little golden-haired daughters
of faltering screen stars always
end their prayers with a plea that
mamma be given a bit—"Please,
just a little bit"—in a Frank Cap-
ra production. Any Frank Capra
production.
But it might well be. A brief
and fleeting appearance in many
a Capra film has revitalised the
professional life of many a deserv-
ing thespian, overlooked by other
directors in their scramble to pre-
sent new faces.
May Robson, nearing 70, was
saved from what to her would
have been tragic inactivity in her
later years when Capra gave her
the top role in "I<ady for a Day."
Alan Hale, unwilling victim of a
string of hlnh parts, whooped back
into the front ranks when Capra
shrewdly cast him as the cab driver
in "It Happened One Night."
Clark Gable himself, starred in the
film, got a similar boost. Ft chang-
ed him from a straight romantic
lead, almost a heavy, into a light
comedian, and the public had a
new favorite.
"Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" pick-
ed up the lagging career of ex-star
George Bancroft and gave it last-
ing impetus. "Lost Horizon" prov-
ed that Thomas Mitchell, the ab-
sconder turned Shangri La plumb-
er, was one of the better actors in
films and also introduced newcom-
er Jane Wyatt, now featured in
Warner Bros. "Kissed for Break-
fast."
Capra's latest production, "Meet
John Doc," produced at the War-
ner Bros, studios, which comes to
the Aztec for Owl Show Saturday
mid Sunday and Monday, with
Gary Cooper and Barbara Stan-
wyck in the starring roles, repeats
the good-luck formula for at least
two players, maybe three, accord-
ing to grape vine reports from
Warner Bros., studio where tha
film was made. One to benefit is
James Gleason, cast in a serio-com-
edy role as a managing editor; the
other Regis ToomCy, all but for-
gotten in the constant Hollywood
shuffle.
If so Miss Stanwyck herself will
he among the very first to congrat-
ulate them and call them b' ither.
I "Ladies of Leisure," a Cam a film
1 done 10 years or so ago. w s the
one that sent her skyward, there to
remain since the day he hired her.
Also featured in the new Capra
production, besides those mention-
ed above, are Edward Arnold,
Spring Byington, Walter Brennan,
(lent Lockhart, Hod La Hoci|ue,
Irving Bacon and many more.
There are 137 speaking roles in all.

Messrs. McGaha and Fell, "that

from well.- of tin- type is in most
i a . badly deteriorated and what
is ii aide could, in most cases, on
ly he utilized in very shallow wells
as it is too light to ti.-e in deep
w ells."
That point recovery of the ma
11 e ii ill from abandoned wells is in
I consei|ilential in comparison with
the principal loss that would occur
in national recources, they said.
". . . it would seem absurd in the
| critical situation that now con-
fronts our Nation to abandon large
know n reserve- which are becom-
ing increasingly difficult to re-
cover," tin association officials
usse rted.
The economic point stressed to
the Coordinator was that an ade-
■ <|iiate price is necessary to the con-
tinued operation of the small wells.
In considerable measure, preserva-
tion of such wells is necessary to
the preservation of the indepen-
dent producer. Messrs. McGaha
i and Fell reminded the Coordinator
that in hearings before the Tem-
porary National Economic Com-
mittee, it was developed that the
20 largest oil companies own less j
than one fourth of the well.-, but |
produce more than half the oil.
"The independent operators pro-
duce a large portion of the total
crude oil output a ti <1 offer a safe-
guard against monopoly," the
statement said. "In addition, this
independent group is vitally impor-
tant in the -earch for new reserves
as shown by the fact that they
drilled 72 per cent of the total
well in 1 !l 10 and found 7f> per
cent of the new fit Id discovered
during the year."
Specific cost figures on produc-
ing oil from -tripper, or -ettled,
well- were given. An example
given w.i: that of a north Texas
operator whose 0 10 barn daily
produced in 1040 cost $1.44 per
barrel. C o s t s have ncrensed

abandoned every year. "A con-
tinued low price below the cost of
production, however, results in the
premature abandonment of many
stripper wells before they reach
their economic limit," it was as-
erted by Messrs. McGaha and Fell.
