Quite often people
will ask me why stories
of violence play an im-
portant part of the
newspaper.' I was
thumbing through the
latest Jet Magazine
when I noticed the
article written by Joe
Black, the author of
By the Way. He receiv-
ed a poem from Ms.
Betty Smiley and I
would like to share it
with you.
"What kind of world
do we live in?
Sometimes you can't
trust your so-called
best friend.
People lie and call you
names.
It seems that nothing
ever remains the same.
Somepeople have no re-
spect for human life.
They will kill you,:
your mother or your
wife. *
You try and
son and pull them up.
^ut they turn around
And kick you in the
butt.
There was a time when
you could keep your
doors unlocked and
have no fear.
But now you cringe
when a stranger come6
too near.
We have to arm our

he doors and
windows, afraid to
open the door.
We just don't trust
people anymore.
When you want to go
out in your neighbor-
hood to have some fun
you have to watch
over your shoulder and
be ready to run.
Teens have no regard
for their fellow man.
They play loud music
on the bus; if you ask
them to turn the music
down, they turn ag-
round and start to cuss
Whites hating Blacks,
Blacks hating whites.
Why can't we realize
that under the skin
we're all just alike.
So if you want to
make this world a bet-
ter place. We must all
learn to love and re-
spect the whole human,
race." j,,.
When we can do the
above, we'll stop writ-
• &
ing about the violent
crimes.
