Court decision
USFL signing
rule invalid
ASSOCIATID MISS
I.OS A.S0KI.ES -
A ISFL attorney says
a federal court ruling
that the league's regu-
lation against signing
underclassmen violates
antitniit law could re-
sult in college teams
being stripped of their
best players.
The decision by U S.
District Judge.Laughlin
Waiers w^s lo be for-
mally r« leased today,
but a'titrnev Don Msy
ers said he had been in-
forwod of the decision
by the court clerk And
lie said an appeal would
be filed
"You're going to find
Hie highly specialized
players across the
county — maybe
you're talking about the
top 100 leaving col-
lege campuses," lie said
in a telephone inter-
view Tuesday from
Phoenix, Ariz. "Agents
arc going lo induce
;hem to leave. What ra-
tionale is there to in-
duce them to stay''"
Meyers said he re-
renlly asked a college
coach "how much mon-
ey would induce them
(players) to leave? He
said. 'Fifty thousand
dollars.'"
The ruling came in a
lawsuit filed sgainst
the USFL by Bob Boris,
who has since joined
with the Oklahoma Out-
laws. Boris left college
after less than three
years but was denied
entry into professional
football because his
class had not yet gradu-
ated.
' Boris sued when
llcrschel Walker, also
an underclassman, was
signed by the New Jer-
sev Generals of the
U$Fl.
Bons' attorney. John
L'Kstrange Jr.. said in
San Diego Tuesday
night that he had not
yet seen the ruling al-
though he understood
the decision was "part
ly favorable" tartascb-
ent.
L'Estrange said the
suit, filed in August,
contended that the
L'SFL's eligibility rule,
as it was applied to
Boris, constituted an
unreasonable restraint
of trade in violation of
federal antitrust laws
Meyers said «he
league contended that
signing underclassmen
was wrong because
many players were
lackmg the' emotional,
physical and mental
maturity to play profes-
sional football
"You've got kickers,
place kickers, wide re-
ceivers, skilled position
(players), who can
probably play profes-
sional football." he
said
But both the NFL
and the USFL are
mindful of the down-
side." he said
"What you have are
underclassmen com-
peting with profession-
als for their livelihood "
Secondly, he said.
"Let's say you have an
18-year-old college
