Both ends
of the
blowout
For Elgin head coach Darrell
Uptmor, consistency is his
team's biggest rival.
The streaky Elgin Wildcats
found themselves on both ends
of blowouts Thursday night,
squashing Sacred Heart 12-2
then falling to Luling 14-1. The
Cats continue play in the Luling
Varsity Tournament today at
2:30 p.m.
"We really need to put it
together and keep it going," said
Uptmor. "One game we play
pretty good in the field, and the
next we boot six balls. That'll
kill you."
Consistency wasn't the
problem in the first-round
matchup with Sacred Heart. The
Class 1A Tigers were no match
for the Elgin clubs, hammering
nine runs in the first two innings
before 10-run niling the Tigers
in the fourth.
Elgin pitcher David King (2-
1) picked up the win, striking
out five in two innings of work.
Reliever Jeffery Orts allowed
just one hit and struck out four
in the final two innings.
By the second game of the
evening the Wildcats (5-5-1)
were wishing they had saved
some of the run production that
had come so easily in game one.

"Corey didn't pitch- - thai
badly. He's a good pitcher, there
just wasn't anyone there to back
him up," said Uptmor.
After wrapping up the Luling
Tournament tomorrow, Elgin
hosts the tough St. Michaels
Crusaders Tuesday.

Twenty-eight runs on 31 hits.
Those were the totals for
Bastrop pitching Thursday night
after being rocked in the first
two rounds of the very
competitive Brenham Varsity
Tournament.
The Bears opened the round
robin tourney with some
impressive offense of their own,
slamming four doubles during
an eight-run third against El
Campo. Right fielder Richard
Boyd drove in two, while left
fielder Zach Kwder scored three
with a bases loaded double.
Three walks and an error in
the bottom of the frame pulled
the Ricebirds back within a run.
They eventually took the lead
for good with back-to-back-to-
back singles in the bottom of
the sixth.

Just seven games ago,
Washington combined with

"Our pitching has come
through for us. We dont have a
lot of power, so thafs how we're
going to have to win games,"
Tiger coach Chris Cauley said.
Timely pitching and an
aggressive attitude on the base
paths has won games for the
Tigers so far. Smithville (4-5; 1-

11 stolen bases Wednesday,
mannfaptiiring their highest
offensive output of the season.
Tiger bats hit .441 against
Bobcat pitching, including eight
singles during a five-run third.
Washington (1-1) used eight
strikeouts in five innings to
record his first win of the
season.
Friday night the Tigers used
another strong pitching
performance by Briggs to take
the first game of the Gonzales
Tournament, edging Poth 6-5.
Briggs gave up just two
earned runs in 4 2/3 innings
before Branson Myers (2-2)
came on to score the win.

But that would not be enough
fin* right-hander Josh Coy (2-1)
to avoid his first loss of the
year. In just six innings Coy
allowed more hits than he had in
13 previous innings (11).
The Bears (3-6) fell prey to
the potent Waco High sticks in
the second game. The Lions
used six first inning singles to
pull ahead 6-0 before Bastrop
packed up a baL Marco
Palacios's double drove a pair in
the bottom of the inning, but
that would be all of the offense
Bastrop could muster.
Pitcher Chris Moore (1-4)
was roped for 17 runs on 18 hits
in five innings of work. He
allowed just one walk during the
complete game loss.
