Bear golfers look to
step into spotlight
BASTROP HIGH SCHOOL
GOLF
Living in the shadow of their
State Champion counterparts,
the BHS boys golf teani, as
successful as they have been,
have never had an opportunity
to shine on their own.
Although they have reached
the Regional playoffs for eight
consecutive years, and placed
third in Region 4A last year, the
Beattt have- been repeatedly
overshadowed by the very
talented BHS Lady Bears.
"I think the boys are hungry.
They are ready to step out of the
girls' shadow," said BHS golf
wowr marvuj JCVctiUv.
"The boys have been close to
the state tournament before, but
they have never been able to
take that extra step. It think this
year especially the boys are
ready to take that step."
Every year since 1987 the
boys have made it to the
regional playoffs, and every
year they have missed the state
tournament by no more than
five strokes.
On Friday the Bastrop boys
begin their long awaited quest to
the state tournament, teeing off
their spring season in the Waco
Midway Golf Tournament.
Traditionally the Waco
Tournament has been a thorn in
Bastrop's side. Last season it
was BHS's worst outing of the
spring, finishing 10th in a field
of 22 teams.
"I don't know what it is. We
always come to this tournament,
rusty," said Evans.
It could have something to do
with the stiff competition.
Defending 4A champ Dallas
Highland Park heads the list,
which includes 4A runner up
Anderson, state finalist A&M
Consolidated and regional foes
Leander and Waco Midway.
This year's boys golf team is
young, but as coach Evans says
they are hungry for success.
Juniors . Steve Andeffion,
Toby Grubert and sophomore
Daniel Gal vain return from last
year's 123-49 team. Senior John
Casper, junior Chris Clearman
and freshman Louis Marshall
join the varsity for their first
"year. —~
"This is a young, talented
team that has preformed well
under pressure before. We
believe we can get back to
regionals, and we would be
disappointed if we didn't go all
the way to state," said Evans.
Bastrop opens the two day
tournament on the Cotton Wood
Creek Course Friday at 9 a.m.
They continue play Saturday on
the West Oaks Course at 7:30
a.m.
•Last Friday's Austin ISD
Girls Tournament was cancelled
because of icy whether. Coach
Evans says the tournament will
not be made up, and Bastrop
will try to register in another
make-up tournament.
