"If you're going to play, you've got to be
prepared to pay. So. at least play it safe."
Mrs. Green estimates that the
case load in Bastrop vanes from
150 to 375 people a month In
addition to Mrs. Green, the
dime employs an assistant
manager. Peggy Morales, as
well as two counselors, Josie
Peterson and Gayie Schielack-

The dime also offers coun-

fers cancer screening services,
including mammograms for
women age 50 and older, offers
referrals and information on so-
cial services, rape, family vio-

and alcohol and drug abuse, and
has complete AIDs 2nd HIV

"We are strictly confidential
and non-jadgmeatai." stressed
the 32-year-oJd dssac manager.
There s very iithe we baveirt

The setting is comfortable
and conduciv e to imparting vital
information about sex educa-
tion, and unfortunately, the
dime s main probtezss echo
those of society's in general:
ted diseases tie in together with
the lack of condom use. If
you re going to play , y ou ve got
to be prepared to pay. So. at
least play it safe."
She went on. "Condom use
would prevent 75 percent of the
problems we see nght here in
Bastrop County."
Mrs. Green, who has been
with Family Panning for nine
yean and took over the Bastrop
yob three years ago. say s that
pregnancy testing is the number
one thing they do at the dime
aad it takes about two nzmzzs
for the test results which are
more accurate than home test-
ing. Pap smears and examina-
tions come next, followed by in-
formation about bir|h control
methods, and testing for sexu-
ally transmitted infections STTi
and HIV testing.
When anyone comes in for
family planning the dime does a
survey, and if they find the per-
son is sexually active, they rec-
ommend a HIV test They also
do the health exams, inducing
Teast exams and pap smears
and STT tests.
When I compealed that most
people knew stem pap smears,
for example. Mrs. Green rolkd
her ey es and replied- "You'd be
surprised at what all we have to
explain about what we do. what
the test is and what it means. Ir s
amazing bow some people
function on a day-to-day basis."
She added. "And irs kind of
scary knowing were only
reaching a fraction of the peop&e
oat there who need it."
A new service at the clink: is
providing mammograms for
women 50 years and older.)
But. she stresses the dime is
there for people of any age.
