PRESIDENTS
MESSAGE
"And why the sea is boiling hot
And whether pigs have wings."
HELP!
Immediately after he received
his November HCN LLOYD
ENEIX, Med/66th, wrote to in-
form me that a medic from the
66th had also been awarded the
DSC. It was awarded upon the
recommendation of Don Day, com-
pany commander of A/66. The
award was not authorized until
after the cessation of hostilities. It
was awarded postumously since
the recipient was killed while
tending to, and attempting to
rescue wounded comrades of the
66th AIB. That is certainly "the
last full measure of devotion" and
we must not forget.
Lloyd was not sure of the
spelling of the last name of this
HERO but gave me the name,
Roland Gufaston. The action for
which the award was given occur -
ed between December 8 and
December 10, 1944.
Since Don Day has since died it
is not possible to find a definitive
answer to the questions of correct
spelling of the name, the specifics
of the action or the exact date. If
any HELLCAT has further in-
formation would you please pass
it on to our Executive-secretary
or to me.
As you know I was a member of
the 714th but since it is my belief
that there is ONE ASSOCIATION
for all members of our Association
it is my intent to exclude unit
designation from any message
unless it is pertinent to the story.
Several HELLCATS have con-
tacted me in the past few weeks
with kind words and good
thoughts which were not on
Association business: VINCE
MANCINELLI; "JEEP" CAMAR-
ATA; RALPH PHILLIPS; EARL
NORRIS; WARREN MAUE; ED-
WARD "GRAFFITO ED"STRAZ-
ES; STAN SARNOCINSKI; DAN
LEACY (he likes to be called
lieutenant oh, will he cut my
throat for that); DEWEY ISON;
ANNA TEST (widow of BILL
TEST); and, I am sure that some
have been left out but AHIP (age
has its problems).

PUBLISHED BY THE 12th ARMORED DIVISION ASSOCIATION
Vol. 36
JANUARY 1983
evening stated that the Mustang
Ranch of Reno, Nevada had filed
for bankruptcy proceedings. For
those over three thousand HELL-
CATS who do not know, the
Mustang Ranch is a high class
bordello. Filed for bankruptcy?
What a switch! In these difficult
times not everybody is going in
the hole. Think about it but not
too long.
Oh, yes. One of the HELLCATS
from whom I heard, said that he
knew that I was busy so it was
not necessary to answer. My
responce was that if I was too
busy to answer a HELLCAT, then
I was too busy.
Now that the holiday season is
behind us, and every left-over but
the turkey bone soup (do you
remember?) has been eaten, and
all of the gifts have been returned
for something else , we can
look at the past and give thanks
for those of our buddies who have
survived, and grieve one more
time for friends and loved ones
departed.
Now, also, is the time to look
forward. Thank the Good Lord for
those things which we still have
and for those tribulations which
we were not forced to face in the
past. Thank Him for rosier skies
which will surely come. Ask not to
receive but rather ask what we
may give.
God bless.
Warmest regards

• BACKTRACKS •
In the past month more pictures
have been received by the his-
torians and Hank Hawkins has
identified all of the members of
the 12th Armored Division foot-
ball team. They were: Jones
Matulis, Donaway, Ebelen, Sed
lack, Doran, Commingore, Ritson
Peru, McCarson, Leal, Shanklin
Ridder, Hawkins, Holland, Pood
ry, Decker, Spilset, Yuhas, Web
ber, Surface, Payne, Brady, Swea
sy, Sturbik, Obermuller, Kriemer
Cornell, Denike, Gullord, William
son, Merino. Jones, Manager
Matulis, Coach. Ben Poodry also
helped in the identification of the
team. Leonard Sikorsky sent pic-
tures also, he was a member of
Company A, 66th AIB Bn. and a
member of the platoon that cross-
ed the bridge at Dillingen and dug
in to protect it. He is trying to
remember which platoon it was
and the name of the platoon
sergeant. The nickname of the
sergeant was "Sgt. Shadow" and
Len thinks that his name was
Robert Welch. He would like to
have someone who remembers
get in touch with him. Gene Cross
sent pictures of 92nd Recon troop-
ers taken at Camp Campbell and
Camp Barkeley for printing in the
Hellcat News.
The Historians will be in pos-
session of the new big history
books in the next few days and we
hope to have them ready for the
Nashville reunion. We can still
use prints of snapshots, anec-
dotes, and clippings from our days
of 1942 - 1945. The 12th Armored
Division History Books tell YOUR
STORY so get your part of the
story to us!!
In the next few issues we will
tell the story of one of our very
important attached units, the
