spend a Memorial Day - remembering lost comrades.
Remember, your buddies are waiting to hear from you, but
someone has to break the deadlock and get the ball rolling.
Why don't you start off a chain reaction?
Columbus took a dare and set off on a voyage to the
"unknown." You, you, and you, should plan to set out on a
voyage to the "known." The land of fun, frolic, friendship, and
fellowship with the 12th in Columbus.
Just remember, after a certain age, if you don't wake up
aching, you probably should start to worry.
Cheers.

Last month I talked about the "Unit Dinner" controversy.
Some units think they are mandated by the ADA. Not so. I
can only speak for the 23rd and know we have them because we
want to be with our friends. And as we know, those who don't
want to, don't attend.
And as I have not heard one word against our having said
Unit Dinner, I shall proceed as in past years.
And my thanks to Andy Woods [C] who offered to make a
stop in Columbus to check out our lay-out there. Didn't trouble
him, as problem was solved. I hope.
We now have a Hospitality Room. Not a suite. We will have
our dinner there. As we did in St. Louis.
We do not have a guest speaker.
Any ideas?
Dinner Section: The dinners include salad, potato, vegetable,
dessert and beverage. Choices are: Top Round of Roast Beef
with mushroom; Roast Breast of Turkey with sage stuffing
and gravy; and Baked Halibut.

As discussed last month, we'll follow the same system we
have in previous years. Make your choice, write check for the
full amount and mail to me.
As I recall, warned everyone I chose a dessert I liked. Those
who disagree will automatically become the '98 Dinner Com-
mittee.
Only difference this year is that we'll save the tax.
We pay the ADA. They pay the hotel.
If you've noticed other Units quoting different prices for cer-
tain entrees, they are correct. Am following our usual pro-
cedure in keeping the amount of the dinner stable by making
up the difference from our Fund.
Last month mentioned our new member, Phil Beach, and the
fact he hadn't listed a company. Call from T/4 William Wards
[HQ] solved the problem. Phil was 2nd Lt and a Maintenance
Officer in HQ. Bill, thanks for the info and also the reassur-
ance there's someone out there!
Not being sour but Bill's call was the ONLY item received
from the 23rd this month.
By the way, those of you who have the time, don't miss the
KIA Memorial dedication slated for Memorial Day, Friday,
May 30, 1997, at Ft. Campbell, KY, at 1100.
And thus we come to the subject of flowers. Ted Blostein [C],
Perpetuity Committee Chair, has informed all Unit Reps any
such purchase for this ceremony cannot be to the account of
the Committee.
I plan to send a wreath on behalf of the Battalion, to be paid
for from our Fund. If anyone wants to buy their own, here's the
list of florists:
First is Hilldale Florist [Sue or Regina] at 1946 Madison st,
Clarksville, TN 37043. Phones: 800/841-1405 or 615/648-8807.
Second is: Tarpley Florists [Mitchell or Katie] at 1460
Madison st, Clarksville, TN 37041-0826. Phones: 800/272-1789
or 615/648-1125.
Be sure to tell them you're part of the 12th and give them at
least a week's notice.
I made a crack about only hearing from one person for this
month's column.
Know what that means?
I get to write a Commentary.
Warned you.
What is a Column?
A means of communication between, in our case, the
members and families of a battalion. Such depends on informa-
tion from those above mentioned members and families.
Sounds simple?
It is, when it works.
And when it doesn't, it is possible to write a monthly column
without ever hearing from a soul.
Possible but potentially boring.
Who wants to hear only one person?
I don't.
This battalion has lots of members who write - and more who
don't.
No fair.
Not being a psychic, your Unit Rep cannot tell what's going
on unless someone takes the time to write or call.
Course, he could just make up a lot of stuff.
Like Ernie Garneau just caught a 400 pound tuna. He said it
wasn't worth the effort 'cause he couldn't find a can big
enough to hold it.
Or the Terrible Trio showed up at the reunion to announce
they'd joined the Sewing Circle and would spend their time
