PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
REPORT ON MEETINGS IN TEXAS:
AT THE SHERATON ASTRODOME, HOUSTON:
Congratulations to both the original and current committee in
selecting this excellent property for our 1998 reunion. It is large,
well laid out and easy to get around in. The sleeping rooms are quite
nice. The $68.00 rate, tax and parking included, make them even
better. The committee had a well organized meeting with a written
agenda which helped keep everything on track. Our Unit Reps are
being informed as to the details necessary for their hospitality
rooms. Coming issues of the HCN will advise all available for us
to use to our advantage. It all promises to be one of the best
reunions. Be sure to block our Sept. 9-13. You will be glad you did.
AT ABILENE:
I am grateful to the liaison committee for inviting me to join them
at their meeting at ACU. We met with the university president,
provost and dean of the history department. Our dialogue resulted
in a written document from the university which is currently being
reviewed by the committee. When their views are collated, the
Executive Council will be asked to review the document for its
approval, then sent to the university for the president's signature.
My column in the Jan. HCN brought a number of phone calls
advising me of problems some of you have had with the ACU
project. I spoke with Dr. Williams about them. He promised to look
into these matters and respond directly to you. We were made aware
of the very limited staff Dr. Williams has. There is no money
coming from the university. The only money the project has is
raised by Dr. Williams. It was learned work given to students some-
times does not get done properly if at all.
The committee will work with Dr. Williams to overcome these
problems. Volunteers from our Association could be of help in this
area. Please be sure to read the Liaison Committee's reports.
During lunch at the local cafeteria, a gentleman approached,
introduced himself as a member of the local Rotary Club, and
announced a $3500.00 contribution to the project. He indicated
there is great interest in our project from the citizens of Abilene. I
am certain Dr. Williams will keep us informed on the progress of
his fund raising activities. He will be spending the rest of the current
semester away from the campus on the fund-raising road.
I am glad I went to Texas. I am certain positive things will occur
as a result of the two meetings. Many thanks to these committees
for all of their work.
In response to a number of inquiries concerning the World War
II Memorial, I am informed by the American Battle Monuments
Commission, "This delay in design concept approval will not
impact on the start of construction of the memorial." By law, they
cannot break ground until all the funds are raised. The goal is
$100,000,000. I appears it will take some time for all this to
happen. This project is alive!
All the best. See you next month. Ted.

Fifty-three years ago this month I became a Hellcat when I
reported as a replacement to Lt. Clyde Blair, then CO of A Com-
pay. I had no idea what that would mean to me five decades later.
Joining the 12th Armored Association after I retired from the news-
paper business has certainly helped fill my retirement years. Being
allowed to serve as your unit rep has further enhanced my retire-
ment. So, I say thanks, and I hope we have a long association
together.
I received a nice note from Zetta Parratore following the death
and funeral of her husband, Philip Sr. [B], who died last Nov.
They ran the hospitality room for the 56th AIB for 17 years,
beginning with the first "organized" drop-in room. In a thank you
note to Hellcats and Hellkittens, Zetta wrote, "I will always cherish
the memories of all the happy times we spent together with the 56th
Armored Battalion. You are my friends forever."

In a note with his dues as an associate member, John Swingler
[BJ said his mother, Ruth Swingler, who died Nov. 23, 1997,
"really enjoyed her involvement in the 12th ADA, but most
especially as chairman of the Ladies Luncheon last year (at the
national reunion in Columbus). It's too bad she didn't have a chance
to do more." In a phone conversation, John also said the family
would like to thank everyone for the cards, support and concern
following his mother's untimely death.
If you haven't paid your dues, now is the time. Actually, it's well
past the time. All dues are payable on or before Jan. 1 of each year.
If you do not pay your membership dues, you will no longer receive
your monthly issue of the Hellcat News, the glue that holds us all
together. This March issue of the HCN is the last one anyone will
receive who has not paid dues. This warning comes from the man
who can do just that, our executive secretary. He also urges con-
sidering a life membership as one way of helping the association.
It means less work, Bob Head [HQ-714J said, and with the associa-
tion already "having problems now getting people to do the
