of his much dispersed company. Captain Beach supervised the
rendering of first aid and evacuation of the wounded and was the
last man to leave this dangerous area. His courage, coolness and
initiative in a time of great stress prevented the loss and damage of
vehicles, alleviated suffering of the wounded, and was an inspiring
example to all men of his company."

There is good news today! I have received letters from several of
you and none of them contained any bad news. One disturbing
piece of information is that not all of you have paid your 1998 dues,
and one of you forgot dues have been raised from $10.00 to $15.00
for 1998. Please remedy these two items. Div Arty is the only group
that is 100% as of Jan. 19, 1998. Do not forget a lifetime
membership is a good deal.
Earl and Edyth Nichols [HQ-CCA] wrote that they spent
Thanksgiving in Denver at the home of their youngest son. This son
has his own computer consulting service. Earl says something
always goes wrong and this time it was altitude sickness and they
had to take an early plane home.
They had a fine holiday and are looking forward to a little trip to
Florida after some upcoming surgery. Earl mentions a tragedy
which happened over the holidays to Oren and Ruth Smith, but did
not elaborate. He also is starting to beat the drums for the '99
meeting to be held in Covington, KY, as he lives about three miles
from the Convention Center. He was happy the DeLucas stopped by
on their way to Columbus.
Earl, please stop at our house on your way to see your son, the
professor at Purdue. Give me a call or write and I will send you a
map. Our house is only about a mile north of 1-465 on the north
side of Indy.
On Dec. 8, 1997, John Berg [CCA] wrote Bob Head, stating his
son and family were here from New Zealand and they were to be at
his other son's in Helena, MT, for Christmas. John also said 53
years ago on Dec. 8 he entered combat. He wished a Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year to all. John, you can't stay out of
the paper by skipping the unit Rep because Bob forwards our mail!
Ray Sacharski [Div Arty] started the new year off right. He wrote
his unit Rep a note, very brief but still newsy. Ray, right after
Thanksgiving, was at Disney World with two of his children and
four grandchildren. They had a wonderful time. The rest of the
family flew home and Sack, who had driven, had time to drive to
Coconut Creek and have a very pleasant Sunday afternoon lunch
and visit with a Div Arty buddy, Hy Lippman, and his wife,
Elinore. He hadn't seen Hy for 50+ years. Hy was my message
center Sgt while I was in Div Arty, and I haven't seen Hy for 52
years either.
Sack stopped in Bel Pre, Ohio, and saw Bob and Jean Brown,
whom he had not seen since Las Vegas. Bob is having a serious
health problem and we wish him only the best. Sack asked me to
remind Bill Hardin and Paul Johnson, "everybody is in but you
two." I assume Sack is referring to them not having sent in their
"Post War Years," a booklet Sack is putting together on some of the
Div Arty gang. This is a good idea and some of the other companies
should try it. Send Sack a letter if you are interested.
I received a nice letter from another Hellcat and Hellkitten in Jan.
Don Fehrenbaker and his wife Wandalee, wrote thanking me for a
video tape of the Div Arty dinner. Don was a radio operator for Div
Arty and was a member of the Association for a number of years.
He dropped out a few years ago but we are working on him to join
up again. Don sent a very interesting picture of his handy work.
Don was a glass bender for neon signs for 40 years. I have sent a
copy of the picture to Hellcat News but I am not sure it will work
for publication as it is a Polaroid. How many of you can send us a
picture which shows an example of your life's work? As a former
IRS agent, I could send in a 1040, but who wants to see another tax
return this time of year?
We have four more life members: June Lindner Stoltz [Red
Cross], Lloyd DeLuca [CCA], Virgil Picurell [CCB], and Woodrow
Edwards [Div HQ] have taken advantage of a good deal on the life
member arrangement.
Hope to see you in Houston, and on the trip to Germany and
France this May. Do not forget your New Year's resolution to pay
your dues, go to Houston, and stay on that special diet in last
month's column. Keep up the good work on letters coming and
pictures are always welcome.

Time marches on. Or in this case "Marches" on. There is only
one major holiday this month to make us happy, St. Patrick's Day.
A tip of the hat to you who "wear the green." There are only two
17thers whose last name begins with "O." Surely there must be
other good ole Irish among us, but they will not be named. That is
it for special March days unless you get all shook up by the Vernal
Equinox.
Isn't it scary to think we are already into the third month of the
year and it is more than six months since we met in Columbus? It
must mean another meeting will be here pronto. You will be
gratified to know the number of Hellcats who have made plans to
be in Houston is high. This coming reunion has generated a lot of
interest.
Bob Steinmetz [HQ] must be very careful these days. Ruth's eye
surgery was successful and she can watch his every move.
Harry Freyer [HQ] has penciled in Houston on his calendar. He
tells us Grover Cunningham has done the same. No, Harry, we
