A Thanksgiving Poem
For All The Hellcats
The Thanksgiving time of the year is fast approch-
ing and I am sure that every HELLCAT has something to
be thankful for. No matter how rough things have been I
am sure that we can look around us and see something to
be very thankful for or someone who has it rougher than
we do.
I am sure that all of us remembered our buddies on
Veterans' Day and had many happy thoughts and some sad
ones. I don't believe that I can put into words how I feel
any better than a poem by Edgar Guest, called "Thanksgiv-

ms.
For every brave boy, land and sea
and of thy spacious skies.
Hear us, dear Lord, whose prayers to Thee
from grateful hearts arise
For all their courage under care
Their patience under pain
This day we come with grateful prayer
And shall each night again
For every miracle aid which faith in thee restored
And brought to safety, boys who prayed
We thank T'hee gracious Lord
Grant soon, We pray, that victory
We long have waited for
When peace on earth again will be,
And war again no more
Wanda and I want to wish all HELLCATS a bounti-
ful and thankful Thanksgiving.
Vic Chalen
17th
Armored
Infantry
Battalion
I am glad to report that mail
has been coming in very well
this month. First off, a letter to
all unit reps showed a paid mem-
bership for the 17th for 69-70 of
70 men before the first dues not-
ice was even sent out. I call that
an excellent start.
Tom Davies, Sr. writes how
much he appreciated receiving a
12th Armored patch from Bill
Johnson. He really enjoys the
Hellcat news and also the fact
that so many read not only their
own unit's column, but other's
also, as this is how his request
was answered. Tom is 100 per
cent disabled from WW2 wounds.
He belongs to the DAV, VFW,
and is presently the Adjutant and
Finance Officer of Post 122 in
Wolverine, Mich., the "biggest,
littlest Post in the state!" He
wanted the patch so he could
wear it whenever he attends a
parade. Says he wants all to know
hs was in the Hellcat Division.
You will remember I mention-
ed a drive I was launching to
draw back at least some of the
35 inactive men recently dropped
from the file. I have contacted
a goodly number of Hq. men
especially to help. Clarence John-
cox Hq. has written me that he
is writing to the names I sent
him and I appreciate his letting
me know he's behind me with
help.
Also heard from Gene Black-
for Hq. who wrote how much
he enjoyed the Cleveland reunion.
He also is writing to the names
I sent him. He asked if I could
give him Leo Grimes address.
Leo called during the Cleveland
reunion and said he hoped to
make an appearance, but never
did. Says Leo was a darn good
motor Sgt. when Gene was Motor
officer. Gene says his wife
Eleanor has for many years
wanted to go to Myrtle Beach, so
1970 she gets her wish. A couple
weeks later, Gene sent me a check
for the booster fund which I have
sent on to Harold. Don't forget
to support the booster fund! Less
than a week after Gene's second
letter, a third one arrived. He
sent along a copy of the letter
he sent to the Hq. men and
believe me, it ought to bring
in results! He also sent along
the name of another non member
he is working on and who I'll
write to, too!
Robert Cooper Hq. writes he
has sent in his dues before it
slips his mind. Had just received
the Sept issue of Hellcat and was
delighted to hear the tentative
1971 European plans. Says they
have long talked about someday
taking a "sentimental journey to
Europe and this sounds like a
wonderful solution." Says they are
very interested and are writing
Clair Mummert a line to let him
know he can add their name to
the list, too! Bob expressed his
disappointment at not getting to
the reunion, but they headed west
to Eugene to see that "No. 1
Cooper heir, Lynne, receive his
Master's Degree." Says it was an
auspicious time when they heard
"Lynne Copper" being called for
a graduate degree from U. of
Ore. Lynne has moved to Mt.
View, Calif, where he is employ-
ed as an electrical engineer with
a subsidiary of Philco-Ford there.
Bob says he checks the list of
those who are lucky enough each
year to attend the reunion and
always sees a good number of
old friends listed. He closed by
saying and I quote: "Best wishes
for the coming year as our re-
porter and hope everyone keeps
you informed of their happenings
so that we can all hear." May
I add an "Amen" to the latter
part. Keep the news coming in.
Let me add it's especially nice
to hear from new one's, too!
Robert Beeman B. writes that
he has a son Michael serving in
the Air Force Dog Security at
Phu Cat, Viet Nam.
Clayton A. writes he saw Nor-
man Davies and has heard from
George Metz.
Stanley Folkman C. writes that
he has a new address. Says he
hadn't seen anyone from the 12th
Armored until the day he moved.
Then he got a call from John
Harville, the medic who bandaged
him after he was shot and Bud
Wiley C. who was with Stan & also
wounded at the same time. John
is now stationed at Fort Bragg.
Stan retired as a Lt. Col. from
the Army Reserve this year and
would welcome visits from any
12th Army buddies. His: 160 Car-
damon Drive, Edgewater, Md.
21037. Says Edgewater is at Anna-
polis.
Howard McLain Hq. writes he
sees Vernie Brown and Andy Hut-
ton often. They all live in Arca-
num, Ohio, home of 1969 state
champs in track, basketball and
music. Howard has a medical re-
tirement from Frigdaire Corp.
in Dayton. Has a bad lung but is
able to putter around.
Edwin Fuchtman A. writes his
daughter Pat is a student at Neb-
raska College. Says he enjoys the
Hellcat news.
Ernest Wallander A. writes his
regrets at not being able to attend
the Cleveland reunion. In June
he was appointed Assistant Dir-
ector-Financial Affairs at the
Graduate Hospital of the U. of
Pa. and is hard at work getting
the new job under control. Hopes
next year he can get away and
make Myrtle Beach.
Chas Galli B. writes his dis-
appointment at not making Cleve-
land this year. Says he's looking
forward to future Hellcat news
for the rundown on the reunion
and all pictures taken there.
Thanks to Harley Olson B 134
we have another new member
for the 17th in that of John
Speedy Hq. Nice to see new men
ccming in regularly.
Earl Fisher C. sent in a change
of address. He is the new super-
visor of Texas Eastern Transmiss-
ion Corporation's new LNG plant
on Staton Island. The new address
is: 259 Walnut St., Westfield N.J.
07090.
We noticed on the envelope Ed-
ward Roberts B. sent his dues
in that he is Commander of Wol-
lrston Post No. 295 American
Legion in Wollaston, Mass. That's
only a couple hours from me
here in Huntington. Why not take
a ride out here and say hello
Ed?
I have several more letters that
just came, but if I don't end this
column now, the 17th will occupy
the entire paper and we don't
want to be selfish. This will give
me a start for Dec's report.
