Seattle reunion. (Sent by Bernie Mezey).
like copies of any pictures and
we'll reimburse you. Janice never
goes anywhere without the
camera, but of course, didn't have
it in St. Louis.
Now to St. Louis and the tours,
etc. Janice's mother lives in
Tampa, so we have been through
the breweries, but the "suds" at
St. Louis were as cold and re-
freshing as anything I've had re-
cently, (no slur intended to Dandy
Don) and sure went down smooth.
Bought some of those cute little
"A" pretzels at the gift shop for
our 4 yr. old granddaughter to eat
with her "root beer." Many on our
bus commented that the St. Louis
Cathedral was as beautiful and
exquisite as anything seen on the
European Tour of 1971, which
included Notre Dame, St. Mark's
and St. Peter's. The mosaics were
just overhwelming in beauty and
color and one could understand
why it would take a life's dedi-
cation by a father and son to
complete them. Such work is now
almost a lost art apparently. Since
we raise hybrid iris and roses, we
were impressed with the Garden
tour, including the glass dome,
rose gardens and Japanese
gardens. We didn't get much
beyond those 3 areas, and were
glad to reach the bus just before
the downpour. Excellent timing
on the Committee's part, how-
ever, I think some of those who
took the open-top bus tour
weren't as lucky. Speaking of the
Committee, a big round of ap-
plause for John Critzas and his
entire family and the other local
members who helped. Many at
our Unit tables were overheard to
approve the designation of tables
at the Saturday night banquet

which eliminated lots of running
around and trying to save tables
for the different Units to sit in
groups. We all hope that future
reunion Committee chairmen will
adopt this practice. Janice enjoy-
ed the lunch on the Robert E. Lee
and met several new gals that
way. The show on the Golden-
rod was well worth the cost and
almost 3 shows in one with a very
talented bunch of performers. As
an enthusiastic member of the
Sweet Adelines, my wife felt right
at home during the singalongs,
and I almost had to tie her in her
chair at several numbers their
chorus presented in their last
show.
Well, as advertised, this has
been my column. If you were
bored or didn't get all the way
through until the end, you better
sit right down and get a letter off
to me immediately, so that next
issue I can make it "your column."
Am still very much exhausted
after a hectic month and a half.
Had a wonderful time in St. Louis.
We motored from Los Angeles
with our 8 yr. old grandson and
vacationed in Grand Canyon and
Lake Powell and Tulsa. Dropped
our grandson off in Tulsa, where
our other daughter lives, so he
could spend some time with his
aunt and uncle, and we drove on
to St. Louis and picked him up on
the way home, and brought him
back to Los Angeles where our
other daughter lives.
Have a number of letters but
am a loss where to start. Will take
Walt Brokop first. He writes he
went to another Mid-Continent
picnic; doesn't see how Ken, Ruth,
Harold and Alene can do so much.
Those Kansas people are the
greatest - real Hellcats. Says time
is getting close (batteries running
down) and with all those retirees,
the Reunions should be very well
attended. (Yes, Walt, we had the
largest attendance since I've been
going to these reunions. The
figures are elsewhere in H.C.N.).
Am happy to report that Walt has
sent in his dues for 1982-83.
Thanks Walt for being an "early
bird."
Letter from Poulos. Says he
was very much surprised to re-
ceive card we sent him from St.
Louis with the signatures of all
the members of the Sig. Co. who
attended the reunion. Says "hello"
and a "thank you" for thinking of
him. Still can't get away because
wife Georgia is not too well. May
move to Sacramento to be near
children and grandchildren. He
says he may get together with us
one of these days as he expects to
drive up this way for a few days.
I was very happy and surprised
to see such a large turnout of the
Sig. Co. at the St. Louis reunion.
We also had three first-timers,
one being a brand new member,
none other than Lt. Hogan and his
wife. (Am sorry I didn't write her
name down, but will get it later).
Bruce Hogan lives in St. Louis
and works for "Ma Bell." His
office is near the Riverfront Hotel
where the reunion was held. Says
he saw the article mentioning the
reunion in V.F.W. paper and set
the date aside and made sure he
was going to be there. I never
saw a more happier man. He left
Europe when I did - therefore
never heard of the 12th A.D.A. (I
never heard of it until 1965 when
it was mentioned in an American
Legion magazine). Strange how
things happen. In February I sent
a letter to John Critzas, '82
reunion chairman, asking him to
locate Hogan and a Bernie Ben-
son. A letter came back saying
there were 220 Bensons listed and
he did what he could, but no luck.
As for Hogan there was one
listing on Taft Ave. but was the
wrong Hogan, even though that
was the last known address. Then
in pops the real Mr. Hogan, to
everyone's surprise. Perhaps
through Bruce Hogan we can
locate some former buddies.
The two first-timers attending
were George Hower and wife
Jean, and Richard Anderson and
wife Mary. Feel bad that for all
the time we spent in St. Louis I
only got to see them at the
banquet. The Howers roomed
next door to me, but when I called
them they were out and when
they called me, we were out. I will
not list the names of the others in
attendance as they will appear
elsewhere in H.C.N. Two tables
were needed to take care of the
Sig. Co. with one single at another
table. How's that for a turn-
out
Northern Girl: "Men are all alike."
Southern Girl: "Men are all
"Ah" like, too."
Have some photos given to me
by Winters. They were taken at
the Seattle Washington reunion in
July 1980. Hope Norb has room to
insert them in H.C.N. Also one of
Winters with Bill Poulos, taken on
Winters recent visit to Poulos'
home.
In next column will write more
details.
I can't understand why no one
wanted to volunteer for unit rep.
However, Mr. Hogan kind of
volunteered while in conversation.
I will ask him to be alternate until
he understands what its all about.
Membership reports and card
will be late due to change in
secretaries. It will be several
weeks until all equipment arrives
to the new secretary in Godfrey,
111., from Kirkland, Washington.
It's inflation when a man has to
pay five dollars for a two-dollar
haircut that he used to get for one
dollar when he had hair.
That's all for now Hellcats and
Hellkittens. Take care, and stay
healthy. IT'S GREAT TO BE A
HELLCAT.
P.S. To all our members of
the Jewish faith, Have a Happy
and Healthy New Year.
