November Report bWth AFA
Hi, Redlegs and Leggettes,
Here we are in the month of
Thanksgiving and we of the 494th have
so much to be thankful for! This year of
1976 sure has been a bountiful one
in locating our buddies and accomplish-
ing our goals. Looking ahead, the goals
will be tougher to attain, but there is no
reason why we should not set our sights
on the BIMI again! it is said that
competition whets the appetite and I
never knew a 494th cannoneer that was

Robert Fairfield (Sv) sent in the
address of a missing Hellcat from C/493.
Good work, Bob, you have made Owen
Schumacher smile again and a Hellcat is
home again.
Jim and Betty Maxwell (Hq) write to
say that they are sorry that they missed
the reunion but that it won't happen
again. They pray that all had a good time
again. They prayed that all had a good
time and a safe trip.
Lambert Hary (Hq) says he is sorry to
have missed the reunion, and that every
day thought of making it. Forgot the
reunion, and thought he would go to
Akron and visit "Big' Smith. When he
got there, he found that Lester and Pat
were at the reunion. Guess he was
thinking too much about the house he
is building in Florida! We will remind
you next July, Lambert.
Nelson Bolton (C) aploogizes for
missing the reunion. He says he has
found some old photos and will have
them reproduced so that they can be put
in the HCN. Nelson: the 494th could also
use copies of the photos for the Batallion
History books ! He is also trying to find
Charles Bailey and Hy Weiner of C/494.
(look for Weiner in Brooklyn area and
Bailey in Floral Park area.)
Don Coombes (B) says the Double D
Cafe in Watertown, S.D. is still going
good, but does not have enough Hellcats
stopping in to shoot the breeze. Don and
Dee are open 24 hours a day, hoping that
no Hellcat should pass by and go hungry.
T. K. Clement stopped to visit and
showed them pictures of the reunion.
Don received a letter from "Big" Bill
McHugh recently. He says that it is
great to see the 494th leading the
Association in memebership and is glad
to see B/494 with so many new
members.
Gordon Bishop (B) says the dues
envelope is a great idea, that he has
never remembered to send his dues to
promptly before, and hopes that
everyone follows promptly as he did.
Mike Nawara (B) had Joe and
Charlotte Yurisich over to their home for
a barbeque. He reports that they had a
very enjoyable day. He also received a
letter from "Big" Bill McHugh. Keep up
the good work, Bill! Mike celebrated his
birthday August 12th by sending in his
dues. Happy Birthday, Mike!
Frank and Ellen Veronese (B) have a
new granddaughter born August 8th.
They now have nine grandchildren.
Congratulations to you both and to the
proud parents. They report that they
are well and hope that everyone had a
good reunion. Hope to see you both in
Philly!
Hector and Lorraine Guertin (A)
express their regrets at missing the
reunion but hope to make the next one.
John Vanitvelt (Med) says he enjoys
the HCN, that it brings back many
memories of his buddies.
Clarence Tucker (Sv) requested a
couple 12th Armored decals so that he
could be identified as a Hellcat
everywhere he goes. Anyone not having
a decal for your car, write to Ken
Warnes and get a couple, show your
pride in 12th and it might also set up a
reunion with a lost buddy.
Carlo and Joyce Himanga (Sv) send
news from the Land of Enchantment —
New Mexico. He is retired but has Joyce
working for Ma Bell to keep him in
spending money! They really like New
Mexico and say there is never a dull
moment. Carlo and Joyce have two sons:
Jim, 27, is taking post graduate work at
Flagstaff and Reese, 25, is working in
Minneapolis, Minn., but is moving to
New Mexico in the fall. They have been
corresponding with Floyd and Mary
Nay. While on vacation, Carol stopped,
for a visit with Roland Oberle, with^
whom he had an enjoyable visit. Carlo,
has lost contact with Sherman Eular
since he went to Japan with the U.S.
Embassy. Do we have anyone in the 12th>
who would be able to get information
through channels in the government to
help us find? If so, please contact Carlo
or Ken Bradstreet. Carlo has also found
that Arvo Hyttinen of Service Battery is
deceased. He was the victim of
accidental drowning several years ago.
Carlo also visited Carl Koscelniak, who
is farming at Hillman, Minnesota.
Whether you know it or not, Carlo, you
have found one of our missing buddies.
Carl is not a member and we will put it in
your hands to make him one!
Roland Oberle (Sv) writes that Carlo
Himanga stopped on his way to
Minnesota and that they had a very
enjoyable visit.
Clarence Chandler (B) writes that he
is sorry that he missed the reunion but it
is good to receive the HCN and he enjoys
it very much.
Ralph Jefferies (Hq) sent a one-liner:
"Retired from the Postal Service in
January." Congratulations, Ralph, you
will have more time to use the Postal
Service and write to your buddies!
Seriously, Ralph, we wish you the best
in your retirement, and may it be a long
one.
Leo Maynard (Hq) says: "Sorry to be
so late in joining the Association. It is
great to read about buddies in the 494th,
a great outfit!" Leo is planning to make
the next reunion. He says that he and
the Mrs. enjoy reading the HCN and do
so faithfully. We will see you both in
Philly, Leo.
A1 Flanagan (C) wrote a short liner,
Quote; "Nothing new". Now, Al, all you
had to do was ask Beth, she would have
told you what has been happening in the
Bicentennial Year! Good to hear from
you, Al, hope the arm and fingers loosen
up!
Bob Campbell (C) says all is well,
sorry he missed the reunion, and that
the 12th is the greatest outfit going. You
said a mouthful, Bob!
T. K. Clement (A) writes that he
finally found California after the
reunion, getting home August 28th.
Some of these present-day navigators
are not the best, T. K. — they get lost
and end up on the moon! T. K. says he
had nice visits in Iowa and South Dakota
and sort of hated to go back home. He
has some dandy pictures of the reunion,
so if you would like to purchase some,
get in contact with him.
Joe Cullen (A) called me last month
and we had a very nice visit over the
wire. Joe and Emily say that they had a
very good time at the reunion and say
they will never miss another one! Joe
says that he will take the Cooks for a
ride down to Kansas one of these days
and spend a few days at the K & R
homestead in Emporia. We are waiting,
Joe!
On the 17th of September the phone
rang and the voice belonged to Rev. Jim
Bartz (A). He was passing through on his
way home and decided that as long as he
was on the wrong highway and had
ended up in Emporia, he would call me.
We asked him to stay, but he had to be in
Cheyenne by Saturday night, so time
was running short and he had to move
on. He said that he had visited Andy
Horn and Jerry O'Neil, but everyone
else he called was not at home. It was
good to talk to you, Jim — wish you had
more time to spend with us.
Tom Rivers (B) has not been feeling to
well, but the B Battery secretary says he
is going to get things moving again, a
little help is in order for Tom from you
redlegs in B! Tom could use help in
getting a B Newsletter going and a lot of
correspondence to keep everyone
informed on who is doing what and
where.
Anyone wishing to have a complete
list of our missing buddies, please write
to me and I will send it to you. It is
imperative that we make a strong effort
to find all of them in 1977. Time is
running short and no one man will be
able to make an effective search as the
mailing costs are a deterrent and
contacts in large cities are needed.
With a few hours of volunteer time
from all of us, many more of our
buddies can and will be found. Buddy,
can you spare the time to find a buddy?
Noted at the reunion: the Artillery
Dinner was really a testimony to the
mess hall training of cannoneers! The
chow line formed early, not one redleg
was late for chow, there was no pushing
or shoving, and no one tried to sneak
into line! No one was self-conscious
about being served at a table, instead of
having his grub tossed into his messkit.
A few anxious eyes were noted, looking
about, trying to find the location of the
wash cans and boing brushes but in a
short time their fears were quelled when
they realized that the ladies who served
the meal were K.P. and would take care
of the cleanup chores. What a change has
come about in the lives of the Redlegs
in a short 30 years! Could it be the
influence of the beautiful Hellkittens
that were so much in evidence at
the reunion? We think so, and are of
the opinion they are the most wonder-
ful women in the world.
Make a buddy happy, write to him
today! Even better, write to two
buddies! To really spread the happiness
around, write to two buddies and your
Unit Rep.; in this way, the happiness
will come back to you three-fold!
Hapiness is simply spreading it around
and after all, a canoneer is the greatest
spreader in the world!
Until next month, take care and be
happy!
"Ham" Rexroat of B Btry looking at
the gang and counting noses, saying
"I've just got to get the beer concession
for these Artillery boys!"
Emil Klenczar of B Btry shaking his
head and muttering "We'll never get
them in the paddy wagon!"
T.K. Clement, who has pinned many a
rose on many a Hellkitten had the tables
turned on him at Banquet as Thomasina
DeGenero pinned a rose on him!
The patriarch of A Btry, Louie
Shelton, who is in his 70th year was at
the reunion enjoying himself talking
with all his boys. He was accompanyed
by his lovely wife, Nellie, who from all
indication will be bringing Louie again
next year.
Fran and Ruby O'Keefe, A Btry,
wrote a note expressing their
appreciation for the wonderful time they
had at the reunion. They say it was
tough getting back into the swing of
things after returning home and that
they can not think of anything they could
enjoy more than a reunion of the 12th.
Fran says that Ruby has him working on
a kitty for the trip to Philly. The
O'Keefes are looking forward to seeing
all of A Btry there!
Eliot and Florence Gilchrist, A Btry
say to be on the lookout for them in
Philly. They are looking forward to
October and the birth of their new
grandchild. They say the new camper is
really o.k.!
Jim Moulder, C Btry and new Member
At Large on the Association Council says
that it will be a big job to get the BIMI
again in 1977, but that the 494th mmust
again give the BIMI a good home! To
start the ball rolling, he contacted
"Ack-Ack" Accosano and Harold
Williams and they are getting to work
hunting down 494th men last known to
be in California. (Any of you 494th
Hellcats who want to help your area or
state write Ken and I will send names
and last known addresses to you.) Jim
received a letter from Gen. Brewer as
did your Unit Rep. thanking the Atillery
for a very enjoyable time. In these
letters the General congratulated the
494th on its large turnout and also stated
that the enthusiasm and friendly rivalry
among the Artillery Battalions was good
to see. The Brewers hope to make it to
Philly if at all possible.
Dues but no news from Homer and
Bessie Brammer, A Btry. Gosh, but we
would like to hear a little news from you
folks, we have to get it through the
Columbus grapevine and it is not as good
as first hand!
