Encounter week began at Howard
Payne campus Monday, Sept. 20 and concluded
Wednesday evening.
Mims auditorium was packed from top
to bottom each morning, even though chapel
was not required for the Tuesday service. Each
evening also brought good attendance, attentive
students and devout worship.
JR Vassar was the lead speaker for
Encounter week. JR is the founder of 'iWitness
Ministries', committed to motivate students
across the country to be "on mission" with a
personal and global perspective.
He is known for his ability to
communicate the clear message of the gospel to
young adults and student. His focus at Howard
Payne was encouraging students to be the church
instead of just doing church.Vassar stressed his opinion through out
Encounter that "people are becoming skeptical
of institutions, one of these institutions being the
church."
He challenged this generation of university
students to recommit themselves to local church
as they continue to have a global passion for
Christ.
The Jeff Berry Band led worship during
Encounter week. Berry founded 'CrossWind
Ministries' which includes the Jeff Berry
Worship Ministry, GRACE Bible Study in
Abilene, Curiously Strong Music Publishing,
and Reality Weekends.
He has served on the HPU staff and has
returned many times to lead worship.
At HPU, the Jeff Berry band
incorporated hymns and church songs along with
contemporary worship songs.
Sophomore Brittany Howard felt
Encounter was great because of the way God
worked in people's lives. She encourages other
students to attend Encounter because.
"You never know what God will do in
your life," Howard said. "And it's an opportunity
to get closer to Him."
