'Desert Fox' Begins Sunday at Tower
R6mmel's Story Told in Exciting Style
There have been many pic-
tures about the last big war but
few have come to the screen
with more fidelity and spine-
tingling action than 'The Desert
Fox" which opens Sunday at the
Tower Theatre. Never has con-
temporary history been re-enact-
ed in such swash-buckling style
that holds your interest and
makes your heart pound from
the excitement it eenerates.
The picture gets underway
with swift action, even before
the credit titles are thrown on
the screen with a British com
rr.ando raid of the North African

one man—Rommel, the Desert
Fox. This unique opening for
the picture is a sort of prologue
and sets the rapid tempo for
what follows.
Plan To Kill Hitler
The picture reveals much of
the behind-the-scenes scheming
of the German generals who
tried to get rid of Hitler and of
the ruthless purging which fol-
lowed the abortive attempt to
kill him. All of this makes "The
Desert Fox" exciting and com-
pelling.
In his screen portrayal of
Field Marshal Rommel, com-
manding general of the Afrika
Korps, who chased his hunters
back and forth across North
Africa about as often as they
chased him, James Mason's per-
formance is perfection. He
seems born to the manner of the
professional soldier and breath-
es life into every moment of this
unprecedented picture. He is a
dynamo of action and a perfec-
tionist of style. After watching
him create Rommel on the
screen, it is easily understand-
able why Twentieth Century-
Fox awarded him a long term
contract.
< ant Out .standing
Jessica Tandy, who gained
considerable professional stature
and critical acclaim for her per-
formance in the stage hit, "A
Streetcar Named Desire," gives
a quietly sympathetic perform-
ance in the role of Rommel's
wife. Equally effective are Ced-
ric Hardwick, Luther Adler,
Everett Sloane, Leo G. Carroll,
George Macready, Rich a r d
Boone and Eduard Franz.

There have been twenty-one
farmers and ranchers that re-
cently made conservation plans
with the Gaines County Soil
Conservation District. The ma-
jority of these farmers are in-
terested in some phase of irri-
gation. There are several of
these irrigation farmers that
are making very good plans for
irrigated pastures for livestock.
The following farmers have
located irrigation wells recently:
A. F. Pitts, Jr. D. L. Nolan, Ray
Chadwick, A. L. White, L. K.
Arant. M. M. Collins, W. B.
Looney% and Ray Doak. O. R.

of 100 acres of his farm, in pre-

Jack Sparks has combined
about 100 pounds of blue pani-
cum grass seed. He plans to use
these seed for planting more
acres on his own farm and
ranch.
This is the time of the year
to get grass seed. Some of the
most popular grass seeds cost
almost twice as much during
the planting season as they do
at this time of the year.

Conservation ranching may
years than it does in the wet
emphasize itself more in dry
years. Several ranchers have
stated that they have been rest-
ing a pasture during the past
growing season, and in spite of
the dry weather considerable
improvement has been made. Mr.
G. E. Newton, in the southeast-
ern part of the district, has rest-
ed about four sections, and Mr.
Odis Horner in northwestern
part of the district has rested
a half section. These men say
they are sure glad to have fresh
pasture to help get through the
winter. The resting of pastures
as done by these two men not
only has merit of having grass
on the range when it is needed 1
MOI>RKN RANCH HOUSE
If you like the long, rambling
type house you will really "take
to" this FARM AND RANCH
Plan No. 503-1 -it gives you
casual ranch appearance in a
very compactly arranged home.
The casement windows in the
attractive kitchen will let in
plenty of Old Sol's rays to both
the work area and the eating
space. This eating space is large
enough for serving the family
meals in comfort. Cabinet space
is plentiful, and the arrange-
ment of sink, range, and re-
frigerator will require a mini-
mum of housewife mileage in
meal preparation. Off the kitch-
en the utility room will provide
space for laundry equipment
and possibly a freezer' chest.
Field hands can get rid of sweat
and grime in the shower off the
utility room before entering the
I rest of the house.
The arrangement of the bath,
utility room, and kitchen in one
single area permits a rather
simplified plumbing system
which will appreciably reduce
the cost for matrials and labor.
The living-dining area is more
spacious than that found in most
homes of this size. The large
picture window and casements
opening on each side will pro
vide an abundance of light and
plenty of ventilation.
All three bedrooms have wall
space convenient for desirable
furniture arrangement. The
closets are unusually large, de-
signed with sliding doors to save
valuable floor and wall space. In
addition, there is linen storage
in both the bathroom and hall.
We suggest that this house
be built of brick or masonry
veneer with a concrete slab
foundation and metal casement
windows and cement asbestos
shingle roof. The gables and
front section under the porch
should be of painted wood to
give the most eye-pleasing ef-
fect.

WHITE FRUIT CAKE
^ pound butter
3 cups sugar
4 cups flour
1 cup milk
3 teaspoons baking powder
Whites of 8 eggs—well beaten
1 medium coconut (grated)
H lb. candied pineapple
1 lb. citron
1 pound candied cherries
1 pound pecans

Cream the butter, and add
sugar gradually and cream well.
Sift flour, measure and combine
with baking powder. Add milk
alternately with flour. Chop

lining the pans helps prevent the
cake crust from becoming too
brown, thick and dry during
baking. Grease pan. Line with

paper. Grease paper. Bake in a
slow oven (250 .). The baking
time depends on the size and
