Happenings That Affect the Future of Every Individual
National and International Problems Inseparable From
Iyooal Welfare
FOR ALL GOOD MEN,
NOW IS THE TIME
A Constitution had just been
written. As Benjamin Franklin
left Independence Hall, a woman
SI him, "Mr. Franklin, what
ol government have you
us?" He answered, gravely
Republic, madam, if you can
keep it!"
As they drew the Constitution
there was ever present the fear
of old-world tyranny and oppres-
sion. They designed the Ameri-
can way in the hope of life,
liberty and pursuit of happiness.
Under that social compact the
condition of even the lowliest
citizen in the new Republic soon
became a magnet to attract men
and women from every part of
the world. The prospect was so
inviting that immigration walls
had to be built higher and higher.
The only country with an immi
gration wall, however, could not
build the wall high enough to
keep out the ideologies of the
countries from which our fathers
fled. Today, the urge to regi-
ment, to place dependence upon
the State, is all too prevalent.
This, despite the accepted fact
that everywhere today, man—the
individual—is submitting to var-
ious degrees of enslavement
through regimentation by the
State.
A free man is one who can
"elect"* to do this or that.
November approaches. It pro-
vides the test as to whether the
citizen can keep the Republic.
Have we the enlightened self-
interest to choose representatives
who live.and feel deeply the real
America?
Can we choose men who, when
our institutions are attacked, our
traditions belittled, experience a
physical pain as if struck a physi-
cal blow?
Facing critical times, how
vote? Prayerfully and reverently,
with divine help, to choose real

representatives, state, local and
national.
Washington on the eve of cross-
ing the Delaware — an earlier
crisis in American history— is-
sued an order of the day. It is
something to take to the polls in
November 1952. Washington said
simply, with no diplomatic gob-
bledegook, "Put none but Ameri-
cans on guard tonight."
The representative you elect
will shortly quote you. By his
word and vote—or even by his
silence, he will say, "I am speak-
ing for John Doe. I represent
him. He has made me his agent
and what I say, or do, binds
him."
Why not make sure now, be-
fore November 4, that he will not
misrepresent you.
Of all the freedoms, the free-
dom to elect is still the top free-
dom. Ask the millions on the
earth's surface to whom it is
denied.

GRASS ROOTS OPINION
Montrose, Pa., Independent-
"Young men and women should
be especially interested in poli-
tics, for it is they who will be
forced to bear the great burden
of our national debt. In the yearr
to come, when they are endeavor-
ing to provide homes for their
families or build up successful
businesses, Federal income taxes
are going to take from them
months of labor out of each
year."

vey of the ratio of the danger-
ously high Federal debt to per-

Coming Winter Will
Be Close for Stock .
Raisers This Year
The stage is set for another
winter of narrow nutritive mar-
pins for livestock. The continu-
ing drouth is responsible, says
C. M. Patterson, veterinarian for
the Texas Agricultural Extension
Service, for conditions that can
cause trouble for livestock pro-
ducers unless corrective measur-
es are taken.
Animals during the past
months, have had little chance to
build up reserves of vitamin A
for carrying them through the
winter and according to Patter-
son, it apnears that conditions
are becoming favorable for the
reoccurance of "white-muscle di-
sease." This disease caused
heavy losses last winter in the
north-east fourth of the state.
Patterson warns that unless
rations of pastured animals are
sunplemented. with vitamin A
rich feeds, respiratory troubles
will increase as changes in the
weather become more sudden. If
the lack of rainfall prevents the
growing of winter grazing crops,
green hay or vitamin A enrich-
ed concentrates must be supplied.
In addition to bronchitis and
pneumonia prevention, the vet-
erinarian points out that vitamin
A also plays a very important
role in animal reproduction. The
large number of aborted, sill-
born or weak and deformed
calves dropped last spring, he
adds, was a direct result of the
lack of green feed last fall and
winter.
The condition known as "white-
muscle disease" also results from
dry weather. A defeiciency of
vitamin A, E and C, ordinarily
furnished in ample amounts by
native forages, develops as a re-
sult of disturbed processes of
storage of vitamin E in the cured
grass and the inability of the
animals to store normal amounts
of other vitamins during the
periods when grass is ordinarily
green and succulent. The lack
of these essential nutrients,
points out the veterinarian, pre-
vents the normal metobolic pro-
cesses which are essential to the
proper functioning of the mus-
cles. As a result of this inter-
ference, muscle tissues, primar-
ily of the rear legs, loins and
heart, degenerate causing paraly-
sis and usually death of the af-
fected animal.
Dr. Patterson urges livestock
producers to plant crops for win-
ter grazing but if moisture is
not sufficient for growth of these

rormi in missouri
' Several hundred farmers,
eluding Charles W. Bordner,
this area, visited the Purina
search Farm at Gray Summit,
Mo., last week, and spent the fol-
lowing day touring the mills and
research laboratories In St.
Louis.
Among the units included in
the farm tour were those where
a grade dairy herd has been
averaging upwards of 14,000
pounds of milk annually per cow,
and a hog unit where 300 to 229
pound hogs are ready for market
in 5% months.
The visitors were told of the
progress made at the turkey
unit and were shown how broiler
and egg production have been de-
veloped to large scale commer-
cial operations.
The tour included sessions at
the beef fattening units, the dog
kennels, the rabbitry and fur-
bearing animal research area.
In the evening the visitors were
entertained at the Mills with a
chicken dinner and a musical
show staged hy Purina employes.
The farm tour was concluded at
a luncheon at which Buckley Kll-
gore spoke briefly of the Purina
programs and how the individual
feeders can get more from what
they have.
